THREE FASHIONABLE AMERICAN SIRES Standing in Racing and in Present Day Breeding of Uncle, Jim Gaffney and King James. Three young American sires of great note and now in their prime are Uncle, Jim Gaffney and King James. They all came Into being in 1005, and all wore of great worth in racing. It so happened that the peerless Colin was foaled in the same year. Sam Ilildrcth owned Uncle, and thought lie could heat Colin. This thought was put to the test in the Saratoga Special at Saratoga August 10, 1907. Only the two started, so it took on the aspect if a match. The two grand colts ran head and head for the first half mile in 47 seconds, with Colin vending slightly. Then Colin looked Uncle in the eye and said: "Ive got you." Quoth Uncle: "I reckon you have." And Colin swept away and won hy a length. However, Colin treated them all alike, and Uncle lost no caste in being beaten by that wonderful racing machine. Sent into the stud early he speedily established himself as Star Shoots most successful son in stud life. If he had done nothing more than send Old Rosebud into racing his fame would have been established, but he is also the progenitor of many fleet sons and daughters. One of these, Motor Cop, is not far from being the best sprinter of today when fit and at his best. Uncles pedigree is as follows: . f 1 Sterling JSU"u"i Isonomy r Isinglass J Isola 1ej,a I Dead Lock... AVenloek XJ I Malpractice b 1 ! f Hermit Newminster " 5 L-strology-4 .Seclusion x Sg Stella... Jim Gaffney is a male line descendant of the mighty Stockwell, and goes back to him again in the female line. On his dams side he is a blending of the best blood of Australia and the United States. It is no wonder he raced well and is a highly successful sire. One of his exploits when a two-year-old was the winning of the much coveted Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga. In racing he was not the equal of Uncle and King James, but was a good one at that. One of his sons, Sennings Park, was recently sold for 25,000, and ho himself was sold for a greater sum to Arthur 15. Hancock, for whom he will fill the vacancy brought about by the death of Celt. His altogether gild-edged lineage is as follows: g f Doncaster Stockwell -Bcnd 0r-" Mangold J? 1 Rouge Rose. . J Hymenia ?5 Ulrica Lexington I Emilia King James represents that line of the house of IEmyar which comes through Plaudit. It is not so .ashionable as that which comes through Domino and Commando, but nevertheless is of great value. Plaudit was a crack race horse himself and a highly successful sire. King James is his best win. In common with others of his age, he was overshadowed by Colin, but after the latter fell liTine and was retired, he and Fair Play came to the front as the best remaining three-year-olds of 190S. As a four and five-year-old he was a great lv.eer, a sprinter, stayer and weight carrier of great renown, and the latest American horse to win 100,000 or more. Although never yet the sire of a really high-class race horse, he is responsible for many useful ones and is young enough to have a day of pride coming.
