WINNER OF THE FIRST EPSOM DERBY AAherever the thoroughbred is known it is also known that the first Epsom Derby was run in 17S0 and that it was won by Diomed. It is not so well known that in its first running that now world-famous race was a dash of one mile, yet such was the case. Diomed was a good race horse and winner at all distances from a mile up to four mile heats. He was a successful sire in England and is found in many of the present-day pedigrees there. He was twenty-two years old when he was sold for 1,000 guineas to Col. John Hoomes of Airginia, and brought to this country. In, Airginia ho lived to be thirty-one years old. He was a grandson of the famous Hcrandd and it is in large measure due to hini and his sons Sir Archy, Balls Florizel, Duroc and others of great fame in their time that this country is richly provided. with Herod blood. The wonderful racers Boston and Lexington were his direct male line descendants "and his beneficial influence on American breeding was of incalculable value. He was a solid chestnut in color with no white, except on the heel of his right hind foot.
