CHINN -WATERBURY YEARLING BAND Thirteen Fine Youngsters in Winter Quarters at the Himyar Stud in Kentucky. BY EXILE. LEXINGTON, Ky.. October 21. There is nothing I more thoroughly enjoy than speculation, not the financial kind, but an examination by tint eye in an effort to determine the chances for and against the budding yearlings developing into race horses of repute. Sucli was my office this afternoon when I made inspection of the yearlings the property of Messrs. Cliinn and Watcrbury now quartered at the Kentucky Association, course. Ten are colts and three fillies, and five of them English and French bred. A number of them were bought last summer at the Saratoga sales, one of which, a big, raking brown, is a son of old Chuck more properly Chuctanunda Little Fraud, by Deceiver, which produces nothing but winners. Two are sons of Celt, both of them chestnuts, dams Sand Dune and Dainty Dame respectively. These were bought out of Arthur Hancocks Ellerslie band. The Sand Dune always has been rather a favorite of mine, a colt of exceptionally placid temperament; has both size and strength to recommend him. The Dainty Dame is more eager in his ways, a quick, bright appearing youngster, which has grown a lot since Saratoga time and is certain to run fast. . Jack Atkin1!; brown son, dam Variant, by .Disguise, dam Ben-my-chree, dam of the Oaks winner. Cap and Bells, has not quite the condition of the others, but is a fine sized colt, a far striding, easy walker, which as he improves in condition suggests something most attractive in appearance. Take my word for it, you will hardly know him after a winters care and attention. The Cicero Sea Mist filly, a bay. is stout and able, big enough, truly, but rather too masculine in appearance to altogether suit my fancy. The Cicero chestnut colt looks like a speed marvel and his dani is Orillia, by Lochryan. He has tremendous driving power, plenty of length, rather light, though, of neck, but 1 am sure he will run fast. Another I like better is the chestnut, also a colt, by Picton Vcletari, by the Princess of Wales Stakes winner Veles, son of Isinglass. Not exactly a pretty colt, but business all over. He has a small star, off hind fetlock white, is long as .1 street, carries a good flag, ii good Walker. This chap looks like business to me. Next I was reintroduced to one of iny especial favorites among all the fillies sold at Saratoga, Fair Plays brown daughter, dam Violet Ray, by Rock Sand, the leading brood mare sire of the year. Here again, as in Mad Hatter and Man o War, is the blood of the two leaders united, and, what is more, Violet Kay is a daughter of that famous race and brood mare Lady Violet and a member of the Lady Blessington branch of the No. 4 family, same as Mad Hatter. A lovely filly this one, balanced to perfection, a characteristically feminine head, quick bright eje. well set car. sloping shoulder, legs all under; her and developing at every point, just In the right proportion. I do not think I could be mistaken in my estimate of her possibilities, and am particularly pleased to see her coining on quite in the right wav. Run or not, what price such a one as a brood mare. Yes, I have saved him for the mind-up. What! Perhaps the best yearling I have seen this year, the brown son of Picton Enchantress, by Collar, a good, hard St. Simon; brown, just a few white hairs in his intelligent forehead, plenty of size, scope and range, alert and keen, abundant length, his back and loin an inheritance from the St. Simon blood of his dam, one of those strong tailed horses which always carry a full dinner pail; a clean limbed colt, standing on the best of feet, his every act denotes the race horse and his disposition the best. A bred one, too Collar. Melton, Ayrshire right down the line; Bend Or to St. Simon mating, wliich before this has resulted in the production of a triple crown winner in Pommern. I tell you this is a real colt, every inch of him. Here are the items In the Chinn -Watcrbury bill: Brown colt, by Picton Enchantress, by Collar. Chestnut colt, by Picton Veletari, by Veles. Chestnut colt, by Cicero Orillia, by Lochryan. Brown colt, by Chuctanunda Little Fraud, by Deceiver. Chestnut colt, by Celt Sand Dune, by Rock Sand. Chestnut colt, by Celt Dainty Dame, by Handspring. Brown colt, by Jack Atkin Variant, by Disguise. Bay colt, by The Curragh Trance, by Ben Brush. Brown filly, by Fair Play Violet Ray, by Rock Sand. Bay filly, by Cicero Sea Mist, by Fowling-piece. Bay filly, by Cicero Loriotte, by Lochryan. Bay colt, by Rire aux Larmcs Semblance, by St. Blaise. Bay filly by Eyebrow.
