MANLY MEMORIAL WINNERS FAME Joseph E. Wideners Manly Memorial Steeple-chase winner, Duettiste, has had a brief but meteoric career as a steeplechaser. His first appearance in a race through the field was at Belmont Park June 4, 191S, where he scored a sensational victory. He led from the start, stumbled at the tenth fence and almost unseated his rider, but quickly recovering and. overtaking W. F. Knebel-kamp, which had supplanted him in the lead, raced him into defeat and easily drew away at the end. In the Manly Memorial of 1918 Duettiste gave further evidence of future greatness when lie finished !tliird to Bet and The Brook, less than a half length separating the three, with Duettiste finishing the fastest of all. In the spring of the current year Duettiste was among the starters in the Green Spring Valley Steeplechase at Pimlico, but was one of throe horses that fell and his injuries from that mishap kept him out of racing until this fall. At Laurel he marked his return by easily capturing the Chevy Chase Steeplechase and Tuesday placed the seal on his quickly acquired fame by triumphing in tlio Manly Memorial, the most valuable steeplechase of the year. Duettistes. success has been instant and spectacular. From a mediocre racer on the flat he. has virtually "jumped" into fame overnight. He has started in only five steeplechase races, three of which lie won, was third In one, beaten by the smallest of margins, and in the other he fell. Certainly a wonderful record with but few, if any, parallels.
