ONE OF 1919S THREE -YEAR-OLDS JOHN 0. S COMMENDABLE RECORD IN RACING AND FEATURES IN HIS LINES OF DESCENT John O. did not race when a two-year-old and consequently is a development of the present year. A right good one Jic is, too, winner of four of his seven races and probably destined to figure well in the middleweight division of our handicap horses in next years racing. Ilis best race took place at Latonin, October 8, when he carried 115 pounds in the Sinton Hotel Handicap at a mile and an eighth and, running the mile in 1:38 and the distance of the race in 1:51, defeated Madge F., 108; War Spirit, 107; Regalo, 112; Sun God, 108; Linden, 110, and Oiuond, 10G. That was a capital race and an exposition of his best form of tills year. When it came to the running of the Latonin Championship Stakes he made the running for over a mile and a quarter, then fell away beaten and finished next to last. Two things can be deduced from this. One, and tiie most likely to be accepted, is that he cannot stay a. mile and three-quarters at a good racing pace. The other, and about as likely to be correct, is that his preparation for the big race had not been conducted along" adequate lines. According to the Bruce Lowe system John O. has no family number. Notwithstanding this not greatly important circumstance, lie is a blue blood thoroughbred, with a great preponderance of Eclipse lines in liis makeup. In his fifth removal he traces to Eclipse twenty-six times, to Herod five and to Matchem once, showing a lack of balance in his allotment of the three cardinal lines. His daddy, Sir John Johnson, wnsj a fleet and hardy warrior of the race track, and his grandsire Isidor was a wonderfully fast horse under high imposts. He won many fine races for Marcus Daly in 1898 and 1809 over sprinting distances. Isidors dam Isis was a daughter of the two Epsom Derby winners, Bend Or and Sliotover. John O.s lack of a family number comes through his paternal line, which runs back to a mare of a hundred years or so ago by the English horse Medley- and ends there, because no further trace of her ancestry can be found, "runs into mud," as one writer has put it. The case is not singular, for going far enough back every authentic pedigree in the General Stud Book of England runs back into the mists of the past to a point where they also "run into mud." This stain in his pedigree did not prevent his granddam Wanda from being the best filly sired in this country by the famous French horse Mortemer. She was a racing wonder and when a two-year-old in 1SS4 won the Surf Stakes, Tyro Stakes, Seabright Stakes, Championship Stallion Stakes, Home Bred Produce Stakes, Flatbush Stakes, Central Stakes and Eclectic Stakes and hi money 0,070, a great aggregate for those days. Another famous American mare close up in his pedigree is La Tosca, the best daughter of St. Blaise. In fact, there are many high points of interest in the pedigree of John O., and here it is: rAmphion ... 12 Speculum or Speculum I E fr 1880 i Rosebery "" .........22 E chestnut. 1 7 Isidor -., 13 J ,,,.
