CURRENT NOTES OF THE TURF According to reports from Maryland Commander Ross has decided to retire Cudgel to the stud. Mr. James, de Rothschild has sent ,000 to the Infant Welfare Fund, to celebrate Brigauds victory in tiie Cambridgeshire. Tom McTaggart is one of the good handicap horses now at Bowie that will be shipped td Cuba at the close of the Maryland season. ZInovia, Diadem, Queens Square and Frecsia are to be sent to the stud. Zinovia will bo mated with Ponimern and Freesia with Greenback. C. A. Stoneham and J. J. McGraw, the new owners of the Oriental Park track, sailed from New-York Saturday for Havana, Cuba, to be oil hand for- the opening of the racing season Thursday. ONeills engagement as first jockey to Mr. W. K. Vanderbilt is to continue, but Monsieur Eknayan will have a second call on his services, and Milton Henry succeeds Stern as first jockey to Mr. J. D. Cohn. Thornton F. Emmons of Philadelphia, noted as a painter of animals, especially horses, was in Lexington recently renewing old acquaintances and looking over the field with a view to .painting some of the famous horses in the Blue Grass State. High prices continue -to be paid for bloodstock iu the Argentine, and the two-year-old sales at the Haras Nacionale in October were highly successful. An average of 3,078 was reached, Ihe highest figure paid being 29,000 for a colt by St. Wolf Hippia.
