DISCOURAGING SWEEPS IN ENGLAND Bogus sweeps are receiving the attention of the police authorities in England and in London re ¬ cently J Drake was sentenced to three mouths hard labor and his secretary Elsie May Sampson was fined 120 and 125 costs in connection with what was known as the Calcutta Plan Sweepstake The English home office which recently seized a lot of postal correspondence relative to turf sweep ¬ stakes lias further decided that where its atten ¬ tion is directed to any sweepstakes for charitable purposes it must intervene to stop that also In consequence numerous lotteries and sweepstakes in England for hospitals and other charitable organ ¬ izations have been abandoned
