WESTERN FIND OF THE YEA PAUL WEIDEL HAS EARNED HIGH RANK FOR HIMSELF HIMSELFTHIS THIS YEAR ALTHOUGH UNABLE TO WIN WINWHEN WHEN A TWO YEAR OLD By E X I L E Possibly the racing find among the threeyearolds ami over division of the year is the Hamilton nnrt Canadian Derby winner Paul Weidcl a brown threeyearold son of Golden Maxim and Lady Lexing ¬ ton Last year as a twoyearold Paul Weidel although lie tool his part in a half dozen races failed to register a win and the best lie could do was to run second to Horace Lerch in June at Lntonia and second in February to Ford in Havana The reason of Paul Weidels early retirement from the firing line I do not know but judging from his this years improved rating form the proper policy Avas pur ¬ sued for the colt has already scored six victories out of nine attempts this year After twice running unsuccessfully at Lexington Paul Weidel scored his lirst success in racing over the onemile course at Churchill Downs in May and quickly followed this up by an easy win over the one and oneqnarter miles distance and then beat Atta Hoy II over a heavy course for the Central Park Handicap of one and one sixteenth miles and after this created somewhat of a surprise when he defeated a much better favorite in Peace Pennant and a speedy band over a fast track again at one and a sixteenth miles On the first day of the recent Latoaia meeting Paul Weidel once more gave the followers of the turf a taste of his quality when he easily beat Sewell Combs Lady Fair Play and Hrookholt for a threequarters dash winning easily by one and a half lengths Next came a loser to the deadbeaters Best Pal and Captain Mac and then he was shipped to Canada where lie Avon the one and onequarter miles Hamilton Derby by an easy five lengths from Master Rill and Peace Pennant On June 30 at the same track he met defeat in the Advance Handicap then was shipped to Devonshire Park where he was successful in the Detroit Stakes A hurried trip to Fort Krie AVIS made a few days later and the Canadian Derby Ava added to his list of victories Paul Weidel winning by seven lengths over a slow track running the mile and a quarter in 207 Again the sturdy traveler was loaded on the cars and sent to Windsor when Iif ran unplaced in the Frontier Handicap Paul Weidel therefore is a most versatile horse one capable tit Avinning over all distances under all sorts of weights no matter be the track fast muddy or slow Yet this colt trainers please take notice could not or rather did not win in his twoyearold days daysPaul Paul Weidels record for son of Golden Maxim Lady Lexington by Hast ¬ ings and therefore bred Eclipse to Matchem The form of Golden Maxim as a race horse was infinitely superior to that of his brother Jim Gaffney but for some cause Golden Maxim lias heretofore met with only moderate success as a sire but this year he has turned on the steam and now stands well up among the leaders on the winning stallion list Golden Maxim is a son of that goodlooking though a trifle effeminate son of Rend Or or Gulden Garter Miss Maxim by that good Waler Maxim son of Musket and is a member of the Emilia Australian Spinaway Handspun Tanya branch of the No 11 family Bred did I write Kelipse to Matchem Of course he is and Paul Weidels dam Lady Lexing ¬ ton by Hastings sire of Fair Play Golden View dam of Kock View Amicitia dam of Alibi etc etcSome Some years ago the late Marcus Daly dispatched Hamburgs dam Lady Heel to England and had her mated with St Simon Two of her daughters by the AVelbeck sire Lady Languish and Swiftfoot were returned to this country but neither of them so far have been productive of any great winner However Lady Languish to the mating of the Matchem sire Hastings foaled Lady Lexington dam of the Acrsatile winner of the Hamilton Derby winner Paul Weidel Dont tell me there is nothing in breeding Racing performance I have proved to you counts for nothing in a brood mare or how comes it that the union of the lines of St Simon and Melbourne so frequently bears good fruit Persimmon his brothers La Fleche and Memoir St Frusquin St Maclou The White Knight Malster Sain St Wolf and any number of others are all bred on the plan of combining close to the surface of their pedi ¬ grees the strains of Galopin and Melbourne and good results from the St SimonHastings blend were bound to come sooner or Inter The coming also of Paul Weidel is yet another demonstration of the Aalue of the Item OrSt Simon cross Go to you carpers and unbelievers stick to the text of turf history and you will have better luck in your bloodstock breeding endeavors Here is Paul Weidels tabulated pedigree j Stockwell 3 E Marigold 5 F Golden GoldenGarter chestnut 1S77 Rouge Rose j Fj Thormaiiby 4 11 Garter 2 Ellen
