man and war AM JOHN p: grier TO MEET IN THE FIFTY-FIRST RUNNING OF THE FAMOUS TRAVERS STAKES TO BE DECIDED AT SARATOGA TODAY Ever since that memorable race between Man o War and John P. Grier in the Dwyer Stakes at Aqueduct on July 10, when the champion triumphed after meeting the llrst real serious opposition he encountered this year, every one of the 30,000 persons who witnessed that contest, as well as the countless number of sportsmen throughout the country; have hoped that Mini o War and John P. Grier would meet again. That hope will be realized today at Saratoga in the lifty-Iirst running of the famous Travers Stakes. James Rowe, the shrewd arid capable trainer of the Whitney stable,: appears to be set on dethroning the champion, for, in addition to John P. Grier, he is sending Upset, the only colt that ihas ever beaten Mali V War, to do battle against the great son of Fair Play. However, todays race is practically looked upon everywhere as a match between the champion and John P. Grier. There will be a difference In weight slightly in favor of Man o War. In the Dwyer Stakes Man o War carried 120 pounds and John P. Grier 10S. Today Man o Wars impost will be 129 pounds and John P. Griers 115. This would mean a difference of four pounds in favor of the Riddle colt. But tins Travers is at one mile and a quarter and the Dwyer was at one mile and an eighth, in which Man o War set a world!! mark by running the distance in 1:49. Will the distance favor Man o War or John P. Grier? In the Dwyer John P. Grier had his head in front of Man o War an eighth out, but just for a second. After that lie tired and was soundly beaten when the two colts came to tlie finish. John P. Grier has not been under colors since -that day, while Man o War has recently captured the Miller Stakes at Saratoga. One thing is certain, that a tremendous crowd will be present to see the race, and few there are who do not believe that the champion will come through with colors flying. The history of the Travers Stakes carries with it the recollections of the oldest turfmen. Its first running was back in Civil War times. It was inaugurated in 1S64 and Hunter and Travers Kentucky was its first winner. Then followed victories of such noted thoroughbreds which have gone to make turf history in America as Glenelg, Kingfisher, Harry" Bassett, Joe" Daniels, Tom Bowling, Baden Baden, Duke of Magenta, Falsetto, Hindoo, Inspector 1?., Henry of Navarre, Blues, Hermls, Broomstick arid Dorante. The distance of the race has been changed several times and the fastest time recorded at its present distance, a mile and a quarter, was made by Hannibal, when he beat War Pennant last year in 2:02.
