TIPPITY WITCHET IN FIRST Once Noted Gelding Wins Feature at Belmont Park. Captain Alcock Inflicts a Surprise in Running a Fast Mile Over a Muddy Track. NEW YORK, N. Y., September 10. It -was an ordinary program tliat brought out a good crowd to. Belmont Park this afternoon. The Ronkon-koma. an overnight handicap at seven-eighths of n mile over the main course, was the feature in which Tippity AVitchct ruled a strong favorite at odds on. The Broomstick gelding, after indulging Tableau dHonneur with the lead to the stretch bend, came on into the lead and won by five lengths eased up. Camoufleur ran well, but he could never get close enough to challenge the winner in the final eighth. Leading Star ran a fairly good nice to finish third. The third race, at one mile, brought a real upset when Captain Alcock showed a complete form reversal by winning easily from Sweet Music, with the even money favorite La Kablee third. Captain Alcock, in addition to leading his opponents all the way. ran the mile over a muddy track in 1:37. Yung Ching, the second choice, was much used following the winner closely and finished a tired fourth. Captain Alcock was the medium of a reported coup, as he was backed from 10 to 1 to 7 to 1 while the field was at the barrier. Another maiden two-yenr-old race followed the opener, whichproved an easy victory for the first-time starter -IInycany.- This .Fair Play filly was., at odds on anil, although she ran a bit green and swerved repeatedly in the stretch, she was so much better than her opponents that she won by eight lengths. Tout Or wns second two lengths in advance of Bacchanalian. The opening dash, for maiden two-year-old fillies, brought a close finish between Ten Buttons and Maidens Ballet, with Mavehonn, the favorite, third. It was a ding-dong finish between the first two for the last fifty yards. Ten Buttons getting the decision in the last strides. Mavehona was four lengths back of Maidens Ballet. There was some activity shown about Gallant Foe, which was backed down right at the close. Chateau Thierry was an early contender, but tired in the last six-teenth. William Hogan, the veteran Irish trainer, who hns just returned from abroad, bought five brood mares while in Ireland. The thoroughbreds probably will be shipped to America about September 20. They were The Loon II., by Grebe Violet Schomberg. She lias a yearling by Thistledon. A three-year-old filly with gray legs by Josh Etna. This fillv was bought for the account of Samuel II. AAillets. Susie M., b. f, 4, by Locliryan Single, and a three-year-old filly by Locliryan, dam by St. Brendan, by Florizel, were bought for the account of K. Herz. Bud Fisher, the cartoonist, plans to go into racing on a larger scale. Through his trainer, Robert Shannon, lie bought yesterday from .Tames W. McClelland the three-year-olds Prince Pal and Hasten On. Prince Pal cost Mr. McClelland 5,000 last winter, and he was one of the winter choices for the Kentucky Derby. His early training evidently knocked the colt out, but he showed several good performances in his two-year-old form in Kentucky. He is royally bred, and was imported to America by the late Mr. Wheelwright of Baltimore. Playcany was claimed by B. A. Lane for ,425.
