FUTURITY DAY AT BELMONT PARK NINETEEN YOUNG ARISTOCRATS OF THE TURF TO STRIVE FOR THE RICH PRIZE AND FAME THAT GO TO THE WINNER OF THIS NOTED RACE Today is Futurity day. No race run in the United States possesses a tithe of the sentiment which attaches to the Futurity. Designed on the broadest and most liberal lines, it has done more to perpetuate the blooded hoise than any other race ever offered. It was a success from its inception and today, after surviving the dark days of the turf when oppressive legislation almost destroyed not only racing but the great industry of thoroughbred breeding, it stands forth in all its glory. Nineteen fashionably bred aristocrats of the thoroughbred world are named to contest the thirty-first running of this noted race. They comprise the foremost vwo-year-olds of the year with one or Iwo exceptions. It is a field in keeping with the best traditions of the race and it is certain that a tremendous crowd will journey to Belmont Park today to witness its decision. The probable starters, together with their weights, riders, trainers and owners, are as follows : Horse. Wt. Jockey. Trainer. Owner. Prudery 124 E. Ambrose J. Rowe H. P. Whitney. Star Voter 127 E. Of the probable starters this speedy daughter of Peter Pan has the best racing credentials. Many are inclined to think she is the best two-year-old of the yean Should she win the Futurity she will be following in the footsteps of those famous fillies of years gone by, The Butterflies in 1894, LAlouette in 1897, Hamburg Belle in 1903 and Artful in 1904. Strong opposition looms up for the Whitney star in Careful, Exodus, Hildur, Believe Idle Hour, Grey Lag and others of more or less reputation. That a great race is in prospect is evident, and it should prove a mighty struggle lor the rich prize, 5,460 to the winner, the largest since Electioneer won in 1906. The breeding and racing performances, together with the best time nearest the distance of the race, of the probable starters follow: Best , Record to Date. Horse, Color. Sex and Pedigree. Dist. Designed by the Coney Island Jockey Club, the Futurity was first run in 1888 over the famous Sheepshead Bay course and brought outa field of fourteen starters, the winner receiving the then unheard-of prize of 0,900. Its popularity was at once established and there was a rush to make nominations for future runnings. In 1890 the gross value of the race mounted to 77,000, the winner, Potomac, receiving 67,675, the largest in its history. When the Coney Iiland Jockey Club abandoned its Sheepshead Bay home some years ago, the Futurity was kept alive and decided in 1910 and 1913 at Saratoga. Since then it has become a permanent fixture of the Westchester Racing Association and is run annually in the fall of the year at the palatial Belmont Park.
