THEYRE OFF IN MARYLAND Fall Racing Season of Seventy Days Begins This Afternoon. , Great Array, of Tempting Turf Prizes Fine Opening Day Card at Havre de Grace. BALTIMORE, Md., September 10. The Maryland fall racing season of 1920 begins tomorrow at Havre do Grace. For the first time in several years no troublesome clouds of adverse legislation darkens the racing horizon in this state. The creation of a state racing commission at the last session of the legislature lias placed the sport under state control and everything is now serene. Representatives of the Laurel, Pimlico, Havre de Grace and Bowie tracks met in the office of the newly appointed Maryland State Racing Commission Tuesday afternoon and discussed the race meetings for the fall and next year, when the number of racing days will have to he cut under 100. Chairman Oliver told the promoters that lie would ask them voluntarily to cut down the number of racing days for next year by mutual agreement in order to avoid controversy in the granting of dates. The following dates for this year were approved: Havre de Grace September 11 to September 30. Laurel October 1 to October 30. Pimlico November 1 to November 12. Bowie November 13 to November 30. A tempting array of rich stakes and valuable overnight races have been offered by the four big ,Mnryland racingjassociations.. Approximately 00,-000 In" added money will be distributed among the horsemen during the seventy days of racing. Such liberality was not without its reward, the horsemen responding with a record-breaking array of entries, among which are included practically all the stars of the year. With " well filled and evenly balanced fields in all the races of the inaugural days program, the Harford Agricultural and Breeders Association throws open its gates for a seventeen-day meeting at Havre de Grace. The Harford County Handicap with ,000 added,. at a mile and seventy yards, for three-year-olds tuid upward, the fall Inugural Pnrso for the same age division over the three-quarter-mile course and the Salute Purse for two-year-olds at five-eighths are carded as the features for the opening day. OLD LE0CHARES IN FORM AGAIN. Boniface, which is coupled with Milkmaid as the J. K. L. Ross entry, is given top weight, 125 pounds, in the handicap, with E. B. McLeans gallant The Porter next with 124. A fine field and a grand contest is in prospect. Old Leoehares is also among the probable starters in this event, having once more rounded into racing condition. Twenty are carded to contest the mile and a, sixteenth race that follows the stake feature and it is a well matched band, with plenty of speed in sight. , Everything is in thorough readiness for the inau-uration of the sport and many improvements will be noticed when the followers of racing reach the Havre course tomorrow afternoon. Preparations are completed to entertain u record-breaking crowd. Frank Capra is here in charge of part of the OBrien stable. The good two-year-old Plurlbus, one of this string, will be sent here later. O. Pons reports that his stable shipped in good condition from Fort Erie. J. Hcupel will do the riding for Mr. Pons. Eddie Rickenbaeher and King Herod of the J. R. Sklnker stable were taken sick on the way here from Windsor. Fort Bliss and another from the same barn fell lame in Windsor. The horses of R. A. Smith,- J. B. Dunn and Al Austin have arrived here from Windsor. Several more stables are destined to arrive from the Canadian courses, but are held up on account of the car shortage. W. Westmoreland and E. Utterback shipped here from TimoniHin. C. Underwood, who left the track as apprentice rider to serve the colors in the war, has returned to the saddle and left here today for Montrenl to ride for W. Whatley.
