SHOWERS AT WOODBINE PARK Despite Threatening Weather a Large Crowd Sees Racing. T i Herendesy First in Feature Race by a Small Margin Many Thrills in Steeplechase. TORONTO. Ontnrlo, September 27. The running of tlip Lnnsdowne Nursery Handicap for Canadian-bred two-year-olds at three-quarters mile was offered as flip feature race at the Woodbine track today and resulted iu a driving finish in which Herendesy, raeing for the Brookdnle stable, managed to win from J. K. L. Ross fast closing Ajom by the smallest of margins. Herendesy was away for-wardly and, after racing Chief Sponsor into defeat, gamely lipid on to his slight advantage, although hard pressed by Ajom at the end. Ajom got away slowly and closed fast and would have won in another stride. Fuse was ordered scratched after reporting late in the paddock. There was another large crowd out today despite the threatening weather. The racing proved interesting, though the favorites fared poorly, the majority of the winners returning good dividends. Two sudden showers during the afternoon drove the crowds to the shelter of the stands, but fortunately they were of short duration. The running of the Roysterer Steeplechase was replete with thrills, which resulted in victory for Mrs. F, Ambrose Clark when Westminster led home Sea Sun. Jockey Thnrber carried off the riding honors of the dhy, winning with Frivol and Vive McGee. Lord Richard Neville arrived from Ottawa this morning and witnessed the races from the clubhouse lawn. Charles Campeau was an arrival from Montreal on his way to Kenilworth. Mr. Campeau reports that n special train, made up of eight two-door steel express cars, running on passenger schedule, will leave Kenilworth October in and arrive at Havana on the morning of October 19 with over one hundred head of racers. Allan Bnlcroft has entered the promising jumper Jim Thorpe in the Mauley Memorial Steeplechase, to be run at IMmlico. That fencer lias been entered in all Laurel jumping stakes. Bnlcroft will also take up a yearling by Delhi The Spirit this fall for N. Mncfarlan, the Montreal owner. D, Kearney was an arrival this morning witli the mare Salvatclle from Montreal. Trainer F. Schelkc, on the conclusion of the Canadian season, will ship the Canadian-breds in the division to the Ross farm at Vercheres, near Montreal. There are at present eighteen yearlincs on the farm which will be taken up and given their preliminary racing lessons. Ten two-year-olds and some of the older division will be wintered at that poipt. Mr. Schelke will leave for Maryland to confer with Mr. Redwell and then return to Montreal for the winter. F, Farrar will ship to Empire City and the apprentice L. Aron will accompany the stable. J. Mclllinnrray refused a tempting offer for the apprentice, E. Hnrbourne. from J. K. L. Ross. Tills lad has displayed cleverness at the barrier and no doubt will develop into a good boy. J. Arthur will split his stable at the conclusion here, some going to Maryland and the others to Windsor. Clyde Phillips will take the Windsor lot. Ed Moore reports that he lias eight yearlings at Nashville, Tenn., all galloping and will be raced next winter at New Orleans. Wash Norvell departed last night for Kenilworth after distributing the condition books for that meeting. C. L. Whiting was an arrival today. Mr. Whiting lins entered into the breeding industry on an extensive scale at Avon in the western part of New York State. Jockeys E. Fator and G. Yeargin departed for Laurel yesterday. G. It. Allen was also a depaiter for Maryland. Jockey Fairbrother departed for New York and will return here Saturday next for stake engagements.
