L AT ONI A CHAMPIONSHIP TODAY SMALL BUT SELECT FIELD OF HIGH-CLASS THREE- YEAR-OLDS NAMED TO STRIVE FOR THE RICH KENTUCKY FALL FIXTURE As was the case on the occasion of its first running, the Latonia Championship Stakes of this year is to be contested by a small field. It will not always be so. In years to come there vill be occasions when from ten to twenty or more starters will go to the post. A big field is more spectacular than a small one, but not so satisfactory to those who enjoy being able to dis-cern what every horse in a race is doing, as a small one. There is no bad race horse in todays race. Every one of them can run fast, carry weight well and stay gallantly. In fact, two of them, John P. Grier and On Watch, may justly be regarded as next to Man o War in merit as three-year-olds. Which one of the pair is the real second best is one of the things to be decided in todays important contest. It is gratifying to know that the race is to. take place in pleasant weather and over a fast track. Last year, when Mad Hatter won it so easily, the track was muddy and the time was 3 :06, the first mile in. 1 :43. The present American record for its distance of a mile and three-quarters is 2:56, made by Exterminator in the Saratoga Cup of this year; the first mile in "1 :40. If it chances that some one of the starters of today makes a stiff pace from the start, a new record is quite possible. The first, mile in 1 :39 and the other three-quarters in proportionate time would do the trick readily. The chances are that each and every one named to start is up to such a feat, if under high speed from the start. One f the facts that seem to assure the thousands who, will view the contest, the pleasure of witnessing a race that will do to talk about a long time afterward, is that every horse named to go Js fleet-footed and in as perfect racing condition as the application of experienced and intelligent training can make it.
