s. c. hTldreths bad year With Stable That Cost Half Million He Has Won Only 0,121. Early in the year predictions were freely made that the extensive and powerful racing -establishment of S. C. Hildreth would figure prominently in the turf results of 1920. Such, however, itf not the case, rather the reverse; 1920 has been anything but a profitable year for Mr. Hildreth. Sam is keenly superstitious, and always has been. He- has Ills "hunches," good and had, and outwardly never shows chagrin. But he has had lots of iilward chagrin this yean He is quoted as saying, with disgust and disappointment, looking at the lame Thunderclap one morning: "That fellow broke down while I looked at him." Hildreths stable nowadays, with thirty or forty horsesin it, probably costs many thousands a year to care for. It always has, the best of food, quarters; clothes, attendance, equipment and riders. Yet it has earned less than a fourth of its cost -with the end of metropolitan racing near. In addition to its keep cost another 70,000 or so has gone for Inchcape, Grey Lag and Co., which, of course, may be rich futures, and probably arc The veteran deserves success. No man has given the American turf better horses great horses, such as McChesney, Lucullite and Priscillian, for ln-stance-t-or better service than the skillful westerner who has spent his life with the American thoroughbred and is second to none in his selection, care and placing of the race horse of high or low degree.
