BUTWELL AND LEOCHARES . Veteran Rider and Racer Triumph in Laurels Main Race. Young Adam Upholds His ReputationIdle Dell Again Displays Winning Form. LAUREL, Md., October 27. E. B. McLeans gelding Leochares triumphed by half a length over G. E. Browns Escarpolette in a rousing drive in the mile and a sixteen ch handicap, which featured the racing here this afternoon. Butwell, astride the winner, laid behind the pacemaker Escarpolette to the stretch turn, when lie brought the Broomstick gelding up on the outside and engaged the pacemaker in a duel which lasted throughout the stretch. Rlchcreek put up a good battle on Escarpolette, but let go in the closing strides and the pair of veterans got the decision. A. L. Austins Belario finished a creditable third. Heavy clouds hung over the course throughout the day and light sprinkles o rain several times threatened the pleasure of a good-sized crowd. Sam Ross Cavendish, ridden by Keogh, came from behind to win brackets in the opening dash for two-year-olds at five and a half furlongs, beating Trantula and Actress. J. W. Hatchs Young Adam, showing here for the first time since Ills New York successes? scored his third, straight, beating a good band over the mile course in the second, race. Water-hnry, won her second of the meeting, finishing a length and a half ahead of Sailing B., in the third race. Smoke Screen getting third money. J. K. L. Ross, claimed Cavendish out of the first race from Sam Ross for ,310. In the same race J. R. Skinker claimed Trantula from T. Calcina for ,010 and later disposed of the Transvaal colt to Milton Smith at private terms. Jockey Clarence Kummer, rider of Man o War in most of his races this year, was given a. great ovation when lie appeared astride Smoke Screen in the third race. A. L. Austin bought Coa Cola from H. McDonald, and By Gone from Jack Price. These two two-year-olds will be taken to Havana. Mrs. Miller claimed Vic out of the fourth race yesterday from J. Lumsden for ,205. Gene Wayland reports that the good two-year-old Careful, in the string of W. J. Salmon, has just begun to spread out. The Wrack Mindful filly made her debut at Havre de Grace April 1G and has won twelve races to date. R. S. Eddy, general manager of the Fair Grounds, left tonight for New York to continue missionary work there in the interest of the New Orleans meeting. He will spend the remainder of the week there and depart for New Orleans Sunday. Clarence Kummer arrived from New York and was seen with the colors up today. The shipment of horses to Pimlico continued today. James Rowe sent all of the Whitney string there with the exception of a pair of juveniles that were held over for Saturdays stake. Mike Daly is reported low with typhoid fever. J. G, Bussey, acting for E. Graham, bought the good looking chestnut filly Plum Blossom. This juvenile is by Joe Carey Berrils Choice and has never started. J. J. McCaf ferty bouslit the mare Huntress from G. Tompkins. She will be shipped to Cuba with the. other McCafferty horses. Sam. Louis sold American Eagle to Blair Mock, Good Hope to J. E. Griffith, Dantzig to Norman Smith, Jr., arid Miss Rankin to Otto Torrell. Daut-zig ran in Mr. Louis colors today. Winall, Gladys, Ira Wilson and Waukeag were placed on the schooling list yesterday. A. D. Harrison claimed Vive McGee from O. I. Whiting yesterday for ,600.
