STORMY SCENE AVERTED , , : Attempt to Ride Shilling on Billy 1 Kelly Almost Causes Trouble. Mad Hatter Finally Loses After Seven Straight Victories Close J and Thrilling Racing. 4 BALTIMORE, Md., Nov. 10. For a time at i Pimlico this afternoon matters appeared a bit stormy. This was brought on when an attempt was made to ride Carroll Shilling on Commander Jtoss Billy Kelly, in the Pimlico Serial Weight-for-Ago Bace No. 3. Shilling had been given permission to ride by the Maryland Bacing Commission at a meeting held in Baltimore this morning. Shilling has been unable to secure a license from the Jockey Clubj and is consequently an unlicensed rider. Bacing in Maryland Is held under the rules of the Jockey Club, for the reason that the State Bacing Commission has no rules of its own. The stewards would be unablu to occupy the stand had Shilling insisted on riding, neither could the clerk of the scales weigh him out for the race. Many of the horsemen taking part in the meeting at Pimlico are members of the Jockey Club, among them Joseph 13. Widener, Harry "Payne "Whihey, Ral Parr, Spaulding T. Jenkins, Joseph I. Davis, E. F. "Whitney, Samuel Boss and A. H. Morris. These gentlemen would undoubtedly have Withdrawn their horses. Matters were explained to trainer H. G. Bedwell, who as in a quandary as to what course to pursue. His employer was. not present and he had no desire to do anything contrary to his wishes.- The upshot of vthc hTatteywastnai5cTey JI "Butwell wris substituted on Billy Kelly at the last minute. The race resulted in a victory for Billy Kelly, which overhauled the tiring ,Mad Hatter in the stretqb, to win easily. Sir Barton, which ran coupled with Billy Kelly, beat Mad Hatter for second money in the final strides. Mad Hatter was caught unprepared at the rise of the barrier, but quickly settled his stride and gained steadily for the first half mile. He rushed into the lead on the backstretch, but then his. early efforts told oil him and, tiring, lie proved no match for Billy Kelly, the gallant little Dick Welles gelding drawing away at the end. Sir Barton, given a breathing spell, after setting the early pace, came fast in the stretch and passed Mad Hatter in the last stride GHEAT FINISH IN OEIOLE HANDICAP. The Oriole Handicap provided a thrilling finish in which Fort Churchill defeated His Choice by a, nose, with Super right at their heels and going fastest of all at the end. Another hot finish came in the third race when Johns Umma, after leading all the way, just outlasted the fast-going Silence. The steeplechase proved easy for Crest Hill, the Lewis jumper performing in brilliant style and winning by a safe margin. Previous to shipping his horses over to Laurel, where they will go into winter quarters, J. W. Dayton, disposed of the jumper Jay Bird to Major Stanley Koch. The latter is the officer who rode Mile. Deniso in the 300-mile endurance race. At the conclusion of the Pimlico meeting trainer Irvin will ship the E. F. Whitney string to Syosset, Long Island, where they will go into winter quarters. C. L. Snyder has arranged to send the horses racing in the name of Gwyn Tompkins to Virginia next week. 31. Buxton was an arrival. He is on his way to New Orleans .to join his brother, Clarence, who has twenty horses at the Fair Grounds course. Dee Hammcnd. whose horses were shipped from Kehilworth direct to Havana, came on from his home in Illinois to join jockey E. Barnes, who is under contract to him. They will leave for Cuba ut the. conclusion of the Pimlico meeting. L. Block, who lias been ill since last spring, was a visitor at Pimlico this afternoon. During the Saratoga meeting Mr. Block underwent a severe operation, which was successful. The books of the Jefferson Park meeting were distributed by J. B. Campbell this afternoon. Deekmate was claimed by A. Swenke, after he won the first race today, for ,255. Lieut. McCreary today purchased the stallion Heather Moon, by Wbitc Eagle, for the Bemouut Service of the United States government.
