STORY OF GRAND NATIONAL How Shaun Spadah Won the Eng ¬ lish Jumping Blue Riband Race Was Thrilling Sight Only Onlythe the Winner Stood Up Incidents of Kace LONDON England Mtirch 25 For some time before the Lincoln meeting it had been more or less common knowledge the Epsom trainer George Poole was hopeful of winning the Lincolnshire with Senhora which was second and the Grand Na ¬ tional with Shaun Spadah SpadahIf If ho is not knocked over Shaun Spadah will win said Poole twentyfour hours before the ice At the second fence some horses fell in front of him He jumped on Anytime and White Surrey but the Irish gelding cleverly put out a foot and saved himself He thus escaped inter ¬ ference and won the greatest National in point of numbers ever known His supporters had another shock when he took the difficult water jump and it was only the wonderful horsemanship of F It Roes that enabled him to recover He was soon balanced and lost a couple of lengths only As this Avas the halfway mark there was no cause for serious apprehension As Rees said after the race For the rest Shaun Spadah jumped beautifully and was never in danger of coming down The fences do want some jumping The second time round there was not a hole in one of them There were only two of us standing a mile from the finish and The Hore stuck to me well wellThere There were thirtyfive runners and thirtyfour fell That is the story of the Grand National in a sentence The nice has been termed dramatic thrilling and remarkable It was a record in at least two respects For the first time in its history 25000 was added to the stake which was worth alout 85000 to the winner Never before were there so many starters Previously 100 had the record with thirtyone runners That was the year the Frenchbred Lutteur III carried off the race raceHaving Having regard to the number of runners and the extremely difficult obstacles to be surmounted it could be taken for granted there would be plenty of falls for many of the starters were inefficient jumpers in the Liverpool sense One only stood up all the way Nevertheless that was not a record recordONLY ONLY GLENSIDE STOOD UP IN 1911 RACE RACEA A parallel is found in 1911 when Glenside the only horse not to fall crawled past the post fol ¬ lowed by three other remounted horses Then Lut ¬ teur III the favorite was one of the first to find the ground This year the popular choice finished second secondThere There was a bright sky and clear atmosphere this year Last year the weather was of the vilest description and as a result more than one wellknown sportsman contracted a fatal illness illnessAfter After a breakaway there was a good start Four horses fell at the first jump four more at the second and the same number at the third obstacle Indeed by the time lechers Hruok was crossed twentytwo of the thirtyfive runners had fallen After passing the water jump which is in front of the stands and where Loch Allen came down there were left All White Shaun Spadah Turkey Huzzard Forewarned The Hore and Glen corrig At the third fence the second time around Glcncorrig found the ground and a couple of jumps farther on All White and Forewarned were also down The former was remounted At Hechers Hrook Turkey Puzzard fell His rider was soon tip again but the horse came to grief at the next obstacle Not to be Iwatcn Captain Hennett got up again and at the finish actually put up a fight foi third place When Turkey Huzzard fell The Hore joined Shaun Spadah which had a good lead The American stuck close to the Irishman under pres ¬ sure but it was always Shauijs victory bar a fall The Hore hard driven fell three fences from the finish and left Shaun Spadah to go on to win by a distance The Hore and his owner were unlucky to meet a better and faster horse for The Hore lacks pace Yot II A Hrown and his old favorite made a great fight When he fell Mr Hrown broke his collarbone as well as a stirrup leather Notwithstanding such handicaps Mr Itrown managed to get The Hore over the final obstacles and finished second a remarkable feat of horsemanship allied with great pluck All White and Turkey Huzzard both remounted fin ¬ ished third and fourth fourthThe The time was 1025 The record time is 931 taken by Ascetics Silver in 10 5 Shaun Spadah carried 151 pounds The Hore Ki2 pounds All White 153 pounds and Turkey Huzzard 170 pounds The Hore was actual post favorite at 9 to 1 Eamon Peag was 10 to 1 Shauii Spadah and Turkey HJZ xard 100 to 9 and All White 33 to 1 against againstSHAUN SHAUN SPADAHS SHABBY ANCESTRY ANCESTRYShaun
