FAVORITES MEET DEFEAT Six Straight First Choices Lose at Tijuana Parke Rides Three Winners SAN DIEGO Cal April 20 The downfall of six straight favorites and the good horsemanship on the part of jockey Parke were the outstanding incidents of yesterdays racing at Tijuana It was ladies day and a large crowd turned out to witness an afternoon of thrilling sport sportIn In the opening dash a race ut a mile and sev ¬ enty yards the lightweighted Belle Flower was backed into favoritism and she paraded to the post carrying the bulk of the publics money She was away poorly and never a contender The finish saw her in last place Ruth Harrigan winning easily all the way with the long shot Go On next best bestColonel Colonel Matt carrying the blue and gold stars of Stewart Polk looked much the best in the second race and heavy support sent him to the post an oddson choice But for showing a flush of speed he failed his backers dismally for he finished far back Lady Small was returned the winner after the hardest kind of a drive witli Lady Harrigan Indeed tlie two ladies staged a thrilling duel which lasted from the head of the stretch to the end Master Franklin which met with early interference was a bang np third thirdAgain Again in the third race at fiveeighths the publics judgment was bad They backed the un ¬ gainly sprinter Apropos on the strength of the fact that lie had been showing keen speed with better horses than what he was entered with today Tom Caro showing an abundance of speed led easily all the way to win off by himself Squash took second place after a stormy journey while Smiling Anna at long odds was best of the others Apropos showed speed to the last eighth where lie quitAnother quit Another favorite bit the dust in the mile and serenty yard race which was fourth on the card This time it was the onetime good horse Hubbub that failed the public His dickey legs in front bothered him and although finishing gamely he was unplaced Lady Inhocenco paying better than 15 to 1 was an easy wiriiierjbver the second choice Sam Hill with Buckhorn II finishing in third place placePOWELL POWELL BIG HELP TO NEG NEGThe The closest finish of the day came in the fifth race at five and a half furlongs in which six horses passed the judges almost abreast Superior riding was responsible for the victory of the con ¬ sistent little plater Neg Jockey Powell who seems to have stepped into the boots of Benny Marinclli since the latters departure Rode Nog and he put up a finish which would hare been a credit to many riders of more experience He clearly outrode Noble on Lonely and kept his tiring mount going fast although tiring palpably Ncg won by inches with Lonely a like distance in front of Green Mint while Ike Mills John Jr and Danc ¬ ing Girl were right at their heels heelsJockey Jockey Parke scored his second win of the day when he landed Lewis B a winner in the sixth race by a short head with Tokalon Marcli and Prophecy next in attendance attendanceWith With six favorites having fallen by the wayside it was left to jockey Parke to bring home the only successful favorite of the day He piloted Thirty Seven a winner in the concluding dash after a hard drive in which George James Dieuero Hoover and Kathorine Rankin threatened him throughout the final eighth r rEddie Eddie Thomas who lias been acting as assistant starter for Harry Morrissey here left last night for Toronto to school horses prior to his employers arrival arrivalCaptain Captain Forsee the wellknown Pinkerton officer who has policed the Tijuana track since its inau ¬ guration suffered a nervous breakdown and left today for San Francisco where he will enter a san ¬ itarium to regain his health healthA A subscription was passed around today in behalf of owner Tim Mills who is suffering from tuber ¬ culosis and a goodly sum was realized realizedIt It is reported that George Wingfield master of the Nevada Stock Farm has made an offer for the contract of jockey Parke held by A E Smith Ben Jones left tonight for his home at Parnell Mo where he has an extensive breeding establish ¬ ment Jones will take up some twoyearolds which he will campaign over the Canadian tracks in the summer summerIf If racing secretary Leon Wins is successful in his plans lie will stage a race in heats at five cigliths the best two out of three for next Sun ¬ days program
