FIREBRANDS GOOD WORKOUT Goes Mile and an Eighth in 155 Xalapa Farm Stable Leaves for Lexington LOUISVILLE Ky April 20 Several of the less renowned Kentucky Derby cligibles commanded at ¬ tention at Clinrcliill Downs this morning chief among them being Firebrand from the J S Haw ¬ kins stable Ben Bolt owned by J W Bell local business man and Gangway which is the property of F J Kelley of Chicago ChicagoThe The firstnamed ran one and oneeighth miles 155 while the hitter two covered the same distance together in 158 Firebrands performance ap ¬ peared best as he was going along well at the end after running the half mile in 49 threequarters in 143 and mile in 141 His rider was hustling him at the end but lie seemed to have speed Ifift Ben Bolt and Gangway displayed high early speed but they seemed to tire badly toward the finish despite the efforts of their pilots to keep them hard at their task They ran the three eighths in 35 half mile in 47 fiveeighths in 100 threequarters in 114 seveneighths in l2S fc and mile in 143 143Leonardo Leonardo II Bon Homme Eternal The Wanderer and Sweepy the latter a twoyearold made up the Xalapa Farm Stable consignment taken to Lexington today by James McClelland and trainer Kim Patterson Jockeys Andy Schuttinger and T Jarvis accompanied tiie shipment shipmentTrainer Trainer It N Vestal got away for Lexington this morning with Centimeter and five other mem ¬ bers of the G L Blackford string Jockey Sammy McGraw went along to do the stable riding ridingJockey Jockey Newton Barrett who will ride free lance during the Lexington meeting departed for that city last night nightLloyd Lloyd Gentry took all but three of his outfit to Lexington this morning and jockey Tommy Murray went there also Sterling Ilight Over Might and Holl On were transferred from Douglas Park to the Downs this morning and they will be looked after by Olin Gentry brother of their owner ownerJohn John R Alexander of Owen boro Kyv turfman brought three horses which he wintered there to the Downs this morning Two of them are two yearolds yearoldsF F V Staton will send his horses to Toronto on May 10 and campaign them throughout the Cana ¬ dian season Jockey Fred Merimee will leave for Canada on the same date dateGenera Genera manager Matt J Winn of the Kentucky Jockey Club announced today that 02000 in added money will be given away in purses on Derby Day and of this amount 55000 will be in stakes the Derby and Debutante Stakes This is by far the largest amount ever added to the purses for one day in Kentucky KentuckyIt It appears as though the Grccntree Stable will be without representation in the Derby this year as track superintendent Tom Young has been advised by trainer William R Midgely to cancel his stall reservations In his communication Midgely stated his horses are not doing as well as expected and that if he has anything to run in the Derby he will bring only the one here Waldo P Johnson Chicago thoroughbred breeder
