ABSURDS COLONIAL SUCCESS Big Yearling Prices in New Zealand for Relatives of Nlermin BY E B COUSSELL COUSSELLLONDON LONDON England April 18 The successes of Absurds twoyearolds in New Zealand this year have been lemarkable His stock have been carry ¬ ing all before them in the big races racesThis This lias been reflected in the sale of his year ¬ lings G M Cunie who is the owner of Absurd offered for sale at Aukland at the beginning of March twelve yearlings by Absurd and he received 55130 for them These are extraordinary prices for New Zealand The top figure was 7500 which was paid for a chestnut filly by Absurd Eulogy She is a sister to the best Xew Zealand twoyear old Mermiii Eulogy only ran once In England when she was a bad third to The Tetrarch in the Cham ¬ pagneStakes at Doncaster She is a daughter of Cicero She went to New Zeajand bii the same steamer jis Absurd Six Absurd yearlings made over 5000 Absnrd was one of the fleetest Sons xifSiin dridg and among other good races won the Middle Park Plate He is a big fine chestnut horse with immense bone and capable of carrying big weights He was undoubtedly one of the fastest horsas of his time in England He was sold at auction in the December sales 1914 for 5000 when a five yearold On the journey to New Zealand lie met with some accident to his back which prevented him being iised at the stud season in 1915 It was thought he was all right for the 1913 season but only two mares proved in foal to him with the result that a report was speedily circulated the horse was sterile Credence was given to this report because it was known that Sunshine by Sun dridge which was at the stud in New South Wales was almost incapable of getting foals Mr Currie who owned Absurd the next year practically con ¬ fined him to his own maies When these were sold at the yearling sales in 1919 they made most inadequate prices but these arc the now twoyear olds which are carrying everything before them in New Zealand ZealandAbsurd Absurd as has been mentioned is a handsome horse He is by Sundridge Absurdity the dam of the St Legcr winner Black Jester and also dam uf Jest winner of the Oaks and dam of Unrest In a letter recently received from Mr Currie he reported he could have filled his horses subscrip ¬ tion list for 190 four or five times over even at a fee which is one of the highest ever charged for the services of a stallion in New Zealand
