NEW CANADIAN STUD FARM Downsview Near Toronto Has 200 Acres of Rolling Lands Owned by J C Fletcher Who Formerly Kaced in Japan Un ¬ der Name of Mr Canuck TORONTO Out May S When the announce ¬ ment was made last week that the sire Anmer sent to Canada as a gift from his Majesty King George had been transferred to Downsview Stud for a short season horsemen and those interested in racing lxgan asking the question Where is Downs view Stud This farm is situated at Downsview about thirty minutes motor run from this city up the Vaughan road and was secured last fall by J C Fletcher after he had spent a whole year in looking over property in the various sections of the province and its 200 acres is admirably suited for breeding purposes with its rolling lands and good spring water running through Vast improvements are contemplated by the owner and unless all signs fail the name of Downsview Stud will be better known in years to come comeMr Mr Fletcher is perhaps known to racing followers better as the owner of several useful horses now at Woodbine Park He has had plenty of racing experience having been a gentleman jockey owner and trainer for a number of years more especially from 1903 to 1912 when he resided in Japan and raced his horses under the name of Mr Canuck Twice during his sojourn there this Canadian was successful in winning the Emperors Cup the first being in 1910 with Woodbine and again in 1911 with Blue Bonnets During one year his horses ran in thirteen open races and were returned win ¬ ners in twelve of them It was in this same year that he won the championship on his Americanbred horse Tonic TonicIn In the opinion of Mr Fletcher the best liorse he ever owned was Triumphant by Gerolstein Errata and one of the reasons that he purchased Algonquin was that the Canadianbred resembled his American bred Japanese racer very much in conformation and style An interesting story is told about a race that Triumphant won in record time although the rider flashed by the wire pulling up in order that his mount might not win by too far a margin but in the press the next day announcement was made that the first three horses had broken the record thus not giving all the glory to the foreigner foreignerLAYING LAYING THE FOUNDATION FOUNDATIONHowever However getting back to the Downsview Stud Mr Fletcher is laying the foundation for one of the best stud farms in the Dominion It was only last December that he visited Kentucky and paid a large sum for four brood mares to Messrs J 0 and G H Keene The breeding of the marcs will show that he picked with great care One of the mares the fouryearold Highland Mary by Charles OMalley Sanhedrin by Santoi proved to be bar ¬ ren and she may be put in training this year The others are Fine Art by Songraft Belle Vale by Isinglass and the next dam was Meddlesome a full sister to Meddler This mare is in foal to Peter Quince Then there is Merodc by St Si monian II Proud Daisy by Pride in foal to Luke McLuke The fourth purchase Is Hidden Crown by Disguise which has a fine bay colt by Luke McLuke McLukeThe The other brood mares on the farm are Frou Froti by Meddler which has a bay filly by Knights Differ That wellknown Canadian circuit per ¬ former Aprisa by Kismet has a fine buy filly by Knights Differ This completes the inares that I have foaled or due to foal Mr Fletcher being unfortunate last year in having three of his inares barren they being Pampinea by Marta Santa Aida Dunn by Long Dance Wish by Order Whyota by Hanover and Rock On by Trap Rock RockThat That former good racer Knights Differ is at the head of the stud but Mr Fletcher is not putting all his eggs in the one basket but has his sires well sorted Previous to last year Knights Differ had not been given much opportunity to make good in the stud but two foals by him this year at the farm leaves nothing to be desired in the way of conformation and looks If breeding and racing ability counts for anything lie should make good as a sire and Mr Fletcher is going to take that chance chanceThere There are two yearlings at the farm one being a brown filly by Anmer Aprisa and the other a chestnut filly by Ilaudmorc Rock On A number of the mares will be bred this year to Anmcr in ¬ cluding Pampinea and Ruth Maxim MaximSEVEN SEVEN AT THE WOODBINE WOODBINEAt At Woodbine Park under the care of trainer George Finch Mr Fletcher has the fouryearold Algonquin the Kings Plater Steeple the three yearold Ruth Maxim and four Canadianbred two yearolds yearoldsThe The horses in training at the Woodbine arc arcAlgonquin Algonquin 4 by Galatint Chinka by Florizel II IIRuth Ruth Maxim 3 by Golden Maxim Ruth by Stanwart StanwartSteeple Steeple 3 by Galatinc Church Bell by Burgo ¬ master Bandolero br c 2 by Anmer Wish by Order OrderCheechako Cheechako b g 2 by Ncalon Aprisa by Kis ¬ met metEl El Tesmar br c 2 by Inferno Frou Frou by Meddler MeddlerGazinta Gazinta br f 2 by Anmcr Pampinea by Marta Santa
