RIDING CRAFT OF GREAT JOCKEYS Fred Archer the great English rider like many men of forceful personality had a poor opinion of his contemporaries with the one exception of his great contemporary George Fordliam FordliamI I can always make out Archer said once what every other jockey is doing in a race but I can never understand what old Fordliam is up to toOnce Once after he had been beaten in a race by Fordliam a friend remarked remarkedYou You look a trifle put out Fred FredYes Yes he replied and I feel what I look And youd be put out Jif youd been riding against Ford ham in that race He was cluckclucking at his horse the whole of the way I thought I had him beaten two or three times in the two miles But with his infernal cluckcluck he was always com ¬ ing up again Still two hundred yards from home I had him dead settled Ill cluckcluck you I thought and then he swoops down and beats me easily Yes I do feel put out
