SPEED OF VETERAN DODGE Outpaces King Thrush in a Fast Kenilworth Race. Cooler Weather Brings Comfort to Patrons of the Track Favorites Fail Backers. WINDSOR. Out.. July 25. J. S. Wards Dodge was the winner of the AVoodstoek Purse, which was offered as the feature attraction at Kenilworth this afternoon. King Thrush was the one to take second money, and Besthoff was third. The winner was away forwardly and, under restraint, set a fast pace for his opponents to follow. Rounding the stretch turn Burke, who had the mount on the Ward representative, shook him up vigorously to withstand a challenge from King Thrush, but he was again under restraint at the end. The dash, which was at a mile and seventy yards, brought together a field of six, and Dodge ran the distance in 1:43, which is but one-fifth of a second behind the track record set by Old Rosebud. AVhat might have been a serious accident was averted when jockey E. Donohue was thrown when Ten Can got caught in a jam while going to the first turn in the feature race. Donohue. unfortunately, could not get his feet clear from the stirrup irons-, and, hanging onto his mount by the neck, was carried in this manner for several yards. Ten Can ran into the fence and Donohue fell clear. He was badly cut about the forehead, suffered minor bodily bruises and received a severe shaking up. He was attended to in the jockeys inelosure. " Mr. K. E. Haynes, who has been purchasing horses in England for the last thirty years for the Seagram Stable, was a visitor here today. Mr. Haynes has received many congratulations over the result of his purchases in England last fall for the Seagram Stable of seven racers and two brood mares. The former include Golden Sphere. Kentish Boy, Lady Meauve, Brilliant Jester and others. Brilliant Jester is a brother to Black Ray, which was one of the four horses belonging to J. B. Joel that in one day won four stake races at the recent Liverpool meeting. Black Ray winning the Southport Stakes. All the horses now in tin; Seagram Stable are connected with Mr. Haynes purchases in England during the last thirty years. He has just returned from a trip to England, where he bought three two-year-olds and a yearling filly for the AVaterloo Stable. He reports racing in England to be in an exceedingly healthy state and that the class of horses is above the average. He saw Tinspear. a five-year-old by Spearmint, carry 132 pounds and run a mile and a quarter in 2:01k1., while a two-year-old winner ran the five-eighths straight in 57 seconds. WEATHER CONDITIONS IMPROVE. AVcather conditions were vastly improved this afternoon, a cool breeze sweeping the grounds at. all times, which added materially to the comfort of the big crowd present for a Monday. The racing was of a spirited nature, but the backers were at sea in picking the winners. Jockey E. Pool was forced to cancel his engagements following the second race. He was hit over the eye by a flying clod which caused a swelling. T. E. Crist lias purchased on private terms f:"i E. Loll the contract on the apprentice K. Hoi-way. This lad began his riding career at Xew Orleans last winter and showed promise. Jockey E. Barnes, who had the mount on Best- hof f. was suspended for the remainder of the meeting by the stewards for rough riding. The stewards also referred Barnes case to the Canadian Racing Associations for further consideration. The stewards on Saturday notified jockey Dish-nion to accept no more mounts until sufficient improvement has been shown in his general health. Dishmon is still at times bothered by the effects of the fall he sustained some time ago. An X-ray examination of jockey E. Taylor disclosed the fact that lie had sustained a dislocated ankle. The injured member was encased in a plaster of paris cast and will keep hint from the saddle for over a month. The dates for the fall meeting at Duffcrin Park, Toronto, have been announced as September 15 to 22, inclusive. Trainer R. A. Smith of the Sunnyland Stable announced that he would ship from Devonshire Park to Saratoga to engage in racing at that point. E. B. McLeans Saddle and Boots, which was taken down with fever in the paddock on Saturday, was in such a condition that it was deemed dangerous to transfer him back to the stable at AVindsor, The apprentice J. Rowan, who is under contract to E. F. AVhitney, will accompany that owner to Saratoga.
