TROUBLE WITH UNCLE SAM R. A. Smiths Good Horses Seized Because of Liquor Stored in Their Car. BUFFALO, X. Y.. August 4. Nine race horses, including Slippery Elm, winner of the Civic Holiday Handicap at Devonshire Park Monday, are being detained at the Green street yards of the American Railway Express Company and will probably be seized by United States customs officials. Customs inspectors on duty at the yards last night said tha they found a case of French wine, eight quarts of whisky and sixteen pints of the same liquid, besides two bundles of cloth and two motion picture films, stored iu the car with the horses. The horses were en route to Saratoga from Windsor. The horses that may pass into the possession of Uncle Sam before the day is out are: Wilfex, Tom Cassidy, Mark West, Pony Bill, Irish Kiss, John Morrell. Slippery Elm, Ultra Gold and Benevolent. Deputy collector Smith said this morning that if the horses are officially seized they will ask the permission of judge Hazel to sell them at public auction at once, on the grounds that they are perishable merchandise. AVhile the inspectors are investigating the circumstances surrounding the presence of the liquor and merchandise iu a car, a local expert broker U locating the owner of the horses to notify him of their detention. "We have been keeping close watch of these race horse shipments," said Deputy Smith this morning. "This is the third time that our men have taken liquor from cars containing race horses. Once during the last Fort Erie meeting at another time we found liquor in the cars with horses."
