RESPLENDENT SARA TOGA PROGRAM HISTORICAL IRA VERS AND POPULAR GRAND UNION HOTEL STAKES, TOGETHER WITH THE BEVER WYCK STEEPLECHASE, SATURDA YS CHIEF ATTRACTIONS Todays program at Saratoga is resplendent with the popular Grand Union Hotel Stakes of a guaranteed value of 0,000, the historical Travers Stakes of 2,500 and the Roverwyek Steeplechase of hB.000 added as the .".llm-ing attractions that should bring an immense week-end crowd from New York lo swell the attendance to record proportions. Among all tlie great galaxy of famous Saratoga stakes none is richer in historical association than the Travers. which was named for William II. Travers, the partner of John Hunter in tin; ownership of Kentucky, the first winner of the race in 1811. Travers had an inimitable wit, which is well illustrated l-y the story of his retort to the bore who called attention to his infirmity in a crowded room by remarking; "Mr. Travers, I believe, since coming to New York that you stammer worse than you did in Balti-more." "Y-y-yes. b-b-bigger p-p-place." was tiie ready reply. William It. Travers, John Hunter. IS. A. Alexander, Francis Morris, August Belmont. Daniel Swigert, William Astor. J. M. Clay and George I.orillard and his brother Iierre had much to do with the development of the American turf in the period during the Civil War and for a decade after hostilities laid ceased. Each won the Travers Stakes, which was originally over the trying distance of a mile and three-quarters. It was in l.S.tll that it was reduced to a mile and a half. The present distance of a mile and a quarter makes it a first-class trial for an ambitious three-year-old with Saratoga Cup aspirations. Shame to relate, instead of a field of a dozen or more of our best thrce-ycar-olds of the year, only three are carded to contest the tifty-second running of the Travers this afternoon. Prudery. Sporting Blood and Touch Me Not are the overnight entries, and it looks like a gift for the gallant daughter of ieter lan. Certain it is Prudery, both by her aristocratic lineage and achievements on the race track, is worthy to be included among the famous horses that have won the Travers from Kentuckys day down to the champion Man o War, last years winner. While tiie absence of Morvjch and Miss Joy from the Grand 1nion will be regretted, interest in its decision will not be lagging, as nineteen high-class two-year-olds from the original entry list of 225 are among the overnight acceptances. With such as Kai-Sang. Sir Hugh. Pegasus. Oil Man. lSunstar. William A., Bigheart. Column, Ncdna and others, the prospects are the patrons of the famous health and recreation resort will witness a race in keeping with the former history of this valuable juvenile fixture. Perhaps the oft-repeated contention of the Spreckels-Xnpa Stock Farm people that Uunstar is a better colt than Morvieh may be, in a measure, upheld if Uunstar can defeat Kai-Sang as decisively as Morvieh lid. That remains to be seen. However, on the eve of the race Kai-Sang i the popular favorite, and the general opinion is that Sir Hugh. Pegasus, Oil Man and not Uunstar will be the opj outs be lias to beat. The Grand Union has been run since 1!01 and King Hanover its tirst winner. Colin, Iron .Mask, Hourless. Sun Briar. The absence of the all -conquering Swcepmeut from the Meld for the Iteverwyek Steeplechase assures a more open race and followers of that branch of the sport should witness a contest as spectacular and as exciting as has been seen this year. Nine tried and true jumpers are named for the twenty-second running of the Iteverwyek. and Soumaugha. which made the champion Sweepment extend himself last Saturday, will undoubtedly find most favor in a speculative way. He will encounter opposition of the strongest in Minala, Joyful. Itoyal Arch aud Ticket, each and all safe and fast Jumpers. .Many line specimens of the thoroughbred jumpers have won this race in former years, the great Jumper Weidship scoring in it twice, in 1P15 and 1910, after having finished second in it the two preceding years.
