c ENGLANDS PROMISING TWO-YEAR-OLD The recent Goodwood meeting was one of the best of the year in England, in respect of racing of extreme interest. Particularly did the two-year-olds show brilliantly. In respect to this feature W. Allison said in London Sportsman at the conclusion of the meeting: "This has been a delightful week of racing on what is the most delightful of all race courses, and one approaches tiie last day of it with -poign--ant regret that, like all lmmdane pleasures, it is coming to au end and yet not really to an end, for the spirit of Goodwood sport never dies, though materialist money-grubbers may fail to appreciate this fact. "Wo have not seen any great three-year-olds run, but certainly there have been good two-year-old., and among them Loinbaeh might seem to have lost caste, but, I think, he and all the rest of the field for the Richmond Stakes on Tuesday were upset by the astounding vagaries of Fodder, which effectually settled the chance of Shinning Willow. It is easy to understand that Mr. J. IS. Joel would not object to Ids brothers colt, but the behavior of tl-e winner was so glaring, although ridden by a strong jockey like Carslako, that I fully expected the stewards would take action on their own account. Anyhow, Fodder is woefully short of back ribs, and not likely to train on into anything good. Lembach is not quite so good as he promised to be, and I expect to see Shinnig Willow rcver.se the running whenever they meet again. PROMISE OF CONDOVER. "Stupidity is a fine filly indeed, and she beat Pohdoland easily for the first race; but of all Ihe two-year-olds that wo have seen this week commend me to the great, slashing Condover, which won like a really top-class one, but is, I fear, poorly engaged. Only the other- day I was engaged in preferring Torchlight to her sister, Moonfleet, the former being so true to the Lesbia and Glare type. Yet here we seen Moonfleets son, Condover, and there is nothing of Lesbia about him but quite a good deal of John oGauut, his maternal grand-sire. Spike Islands defeat on AVedaesday may be passed into the limbo of the forgotten, for he didnt get off on anything like good terms, but Unison, which was just beaten in that race by Fireficnd, may be something extra. He is by Pommern, but his dam, Nathalie, has not bred anything great up to now. So much the batter for Pominern if Unison does well. "I must confess that I did not lika Sicyon when I first saw him in the paddock. He is of the heavy and lumbering Sundridge type with which we have been long familiar, as distinguished from the Sunstar and Radiant sort. The big, heavy chestnuts, including Sundridge himself, have never stayed more than a mile, and Sicyon is certainly one of this type. Nevertheless, he is a rare mover when extended, and his method of winning the Prince of AValcs Stakes left nothing whatever to be desired, though I fancy Fordingbridge, which finished second, will train on into the better stayer. Selene is another good two-year-old winner of the week, and quite one of Chaucers best. After all, Chaucer is about the best bred stallion in England, by St. Simon, out of Canterbury Pilgrim. AAhat more can you want?"
