ST. HNRY PLEASES MADDEN t Shows a Fast Preakness Workout Before Going East. • Louisville Horses Begin Moving to Lexington to Take Part in Its Meeting. « LOITSVILLE, Ky., April 16.— St. Henry, •which will represent MorUfort and B. B. Jones in the 0,000 Preakness at Pimlieo. ■was given his final work-out over the Churchill Downs track this morning preparatory to bring shipped East tomorrow and he acquitted himself in fine styie by covering a mile in 1:43%. In the middle of the track nil the way, he was never allowed a free rein and, with John E. Madden waving his cap and yelling frantically at Jockey E. Scobie to pull him up through the final eighth, he showed his most meritorious performance since he was put into active training this spring. He wore blinkers today and had no pacemaker. Owner B. B. Jone.s witnessed the colts performance from the grandstand with Kay Spence and expressed himself as being immensely pleased with it. This was the first time that he saw the half-brother of Sir Martin and Sir Barton in action since he became a three-year-old and he stated that he was surprised over his excellent condition. Madden did not intend that the colt should run so fast, but his work would have gone for naught had Scobie restrained him any harder, as he would have puhed him off his stride entirely. Scobie said afterwards that the horse was well under control from the time that he started until i.e pulled up and he was surprised when informed of the time. St. Henry ran the first quarter in 24%. three-eighths in 36%. half mile in 49% and three-quarters in 1:16. It was at this juncture that Madden began to issue the slow down signal. ST. HENRY POOB WORK HOUSE. St. Henry was a very poor work horse last year, either with or without a pacemaker," said Madden before the gallop, "and I dont propose to force him to show his speed. If he runs a mile in 1:48 I will be satisfied, as this is just about the pace at which I have been training him all spring. Sir Barton, one of his half-brothers, was ; like him in this respect, as he would do little or nothing in the mornings, while Sir Martin, his other half-brother, was just the opposite. He would work fast any time he was 1 asked." Madden stated that St. Henry will race at least once and perhaps twice at Jamaica before proceeding to Baltimore to fulfill his 1 Preakness engagement. With the rest of his horses he will be loaded tomorrow night with Belmont Park as their destination. Jockey Russell McDermott will go with the Madden establishment. Ideal Blaster weather brought out a crowd of a thousand or more to Churchill Downs : this morning, but they saw little, as not much training is indulged on the Sabbath hereabouts. Most of them even failed to witness St. Henrys work-out, as it was : nearly 11 oclock before he was brought on the track. The course had aried out completely, but it was dull and far from being 1 fast. Douglas Park had little to offer the visitors, as the two first string Derby candidates there, Surf Rider r.nd Roekminster, 1 worked yesterday afternoon. There was a large number of two-year-olds out there, however. For the first time in years, schooling of the juvenile was conducted at the Downs on a Sunday. This was made necessary because so much time was lost last week through the heavy rains. DLADLOCK A D CHATTERTOX WORK. Bob Shannon gave Deadlock, his Derby hope, a brisk gallop of a half mile in 52% early this morning. He ran the first quarter ■ in 25?5. Trainer C. C. Van Meter sent - Chatterton the same distance in 49 %. He I was timed tin- opening quarter in 24%. Both i ! of these horses are scheduled to get a good work-out Monday morning. B. B. Jones departed tonight for Bristow, Okla., to visit his brother Muntfort, who has been ill the greater part of the winter. He plans to witness considerable racing on th -Kentucky . circuit this spring. A number of owners and trainers moved I ovor to Lexington today to inspect yearlings ; at the various farms in that vicinity. The j exodna of racing stables to Lexington for r the coming meeting will begin on Tuesday. wh€U the Montfort Jones string departs. . Trainer Kay Spence will take about a half f of it, leaving the remainder at Douglas ; Park under the care of W. Butch Covington. • This establishment will not want t for riders as It has jockeys E. Scobie, W. . Pool and H. Stutts under engagement and I will have first call on E. Pool at Lexington. .
