• JOHN PORTERS BEST HORSE Sage of Kingsclere Selected Four, but Favored Rosicrucian for Quality. LONDON, England, April 1.— In estimating the great horses on which his training talent l;ad been used in his long career at Kingclere, the late John Porter always grouped four: Rosicruci-in, Ormonde, Iso-nomy and Flying Fox. yet he leaned toward "Itosey," as Rosicruciiui was known in the stable, and the old Kingsclere trial books bore out Porters estimate, for they classed Rosicrucian as fully ten pounds better than the 1SG8 Epsom Derby winner, a grand horse himself. "Rosey" was certainly the trainers fancy of all the good horses he trained, for ha never seemed tired of soundng his praises, and more than once said that from half a mile to four miles you could not find one to beat Rosicrucian when lie was really at his best. The impression was gained in talks with Torter that Ormonde and Rosicrucian ranked in front of Flying Fox and Isonomy, and he never enjoyed a triumph more than when Ormonde beat Minting for the Two Thousand Guineas and did it so easily. It is recalled that one season, 1901, John Iluggins, the American trainer, chiefly by means of the late W. C. Whitneys Volody-ovskis Epsom Derby, took the winning trainers lead from Porter with a total of nearly J150.000. That was William the Thirds year for Kingsclere. Altogether nine Derbys were won by Kingsclere horses. Beadsman and Musjid were turned out by George Manning. Porters predecessor. But Porter fitted the other seven and no fewer than twenty-four winners of classic races — truly a wonderful record — while horses trained by him earned ,613,000. From 1882 to 1899. inclusive, during which time Porter had charge of the Duke of Westminsters racing stud, the yellow jacket and black cap were carried to victory on no fewer than LGl occasions and stakes were won for the duke amounting- to fl, 251, 405. The season of 1890 was Porters best. During it his horses won S2S3.000. Of this Flying Pox took 77,075 and was not beaten, winning the Two Thousand Guineas. Derby. St. Leger, Eclipse Stakes, Princess of Wales Stakes and Jockey Club Stakes. •
