■ ■ 0 a a ei a li . u in ; j S j • I J y I. ° of a o of FOUR - YEA R -OLD CHA MP IONS BALLOT, STAR OF 1908, THE ONLY UNBEATEN HORSK AND E THE LEADING MONEY WINNER OF BIS AGE DIVISION IN SIXTEEN SEASONS . . I Although the four-year-old thoroughbred is generally considered to be at the zenith of his capabilities, scanty provision is made for horses of that age, in comparison with the money offered for two- and three year-olds. In fact, under our lop-sided system of today, there is not single stake race of importance for four-year-olds in North America. Considering the enormous present distribution of money, there is a scandalous lack of weight-forage races for horses four years old and older. Of course, the four-year-olds have the big handicap to get along with as best they can, but those of great value are few and the earning opportunities are e limited for horses of that age. * The greatest total of money won by a four-year-old in our racing since 1906 fell to Ballot 1908. He started five times and won the Century Stakes, the Advance Stakes, Standard » Stakes, Equality Stakes and Suburban Handicap. Of these only the Suburban Handicap is t now in existence. Except the Gold Cup at Belmont Park, nothing has been provided in recent years to take the places of such races and the imagination of present-day racing officials does not seem to extend beyond handicaps and more rich stakes for two-year-olds. Maybe some one the fertile mentality of J. G. K. Lawrence, in devising conditions, will make his appearance t and be able to remedy some of the inequalities now so strikingly apparent in the distribution our vast provision of racing funds.
