j j I j l j j j i REPEATERS IN BIG STAKES Exterminator Kept Billy Kelly From Unique Feat in Harford Big American Stakes Show Ho HoHorse Horse Has Ever Won Same SameEvent Event Over Three Times BY SALVATOR SALVATORExterminator Exterminator unkindly snatched away from persistent Billy Kelly the unique honor of winning the Harford Handicap at Havre de Grace four times in succession and there ¬ by establishing a record without precedent As a threeyearold the unsexed son of Dick Vvclles and Glena by Free Knight first won this feature with 110 pounds up That was in 1919 In 1929 ho was assigned 127 pounds but came right back again This led to his being steadied with 130 for 1921 but ajaln he brought it home in front Two pounds more plus Exterminator brought dcfat in his fourth essay But what a remarkable record it is even if the race is net a cas sic It is a fixture which has now been contested annually for ten consecutive years and his performances in it have added to Eiliys 510000Two winnings over 510000 Two features of stake racing arc always of interest These are the double and tlia repeat or if you choose rather so to call it the comeback But the real come ¬ back is really not so much a repeat as a return after the lapse of a year or years The instances in which doubles have been pulled off i e the winning the same season of two muchcoveted events are more fre ¬ quent than those of repeats Tears ago the Coney Island Jockey Club maintained an annual fixture for twoyearolds which was formally known as the Double Event and many crack juveniles attempted to win both divisions It was run no less than twentytwo times from 1889 to 1910 inclusive and during this period fivo different colts Torso 1889 Russell 1S90 Hornpipe 1893 Handspring 1S95 and Ornament 1S9G suc ¬ ceeded in their double effort Among those which tied and failed were such luminaries as His Highness Hamburg Water Pearl and Sir Martin MartinBILLY BILLY KELLY AT PIMLICO PIMLICOA A similar event of recent years has been the Pimlico Fall Serial WeightforAge race split into three divisions and dating from 1915 No horne has yet succeeded in whi ¬ ning all three divisions of this race The nearest approach has again been to the credit of Billy Kelly which in 1920 won tho first and third divisions and ran secjnrt to Mad Hatter in the second In the first division Billy Kelly also won in both 1919 and 1920 previous to which Leochares had done so in 191S1917 But third in the second division of 1916 was the best this gccd cam ¬ paigner ever did aside from that thatPerhaps Perhaps the ingenuity of commercialism may some day evolve some way in which the same horse can win a Futurity or Derby a second or third time Old fogyUm still persistent in some angles of racing thus far by allowing a colt to be a two or thrcoyear old only once in his life has defeated this laudable object In this age of fiftyyear old flappers that start everywhere in tho maiden classes this is certainly an anomaly so it may be supposed that in the fullness of time it too will be done away with And then of course there can be no legitimate ex ¬ cuse for snatching away a Man o War at the conclusion of his threeyearold cam ¬ paign In fact many benefits to the turf would undoubtedly accrue making the pros ¬ pect one of altogether fascinating possibil ¬ ities itiesREPEATERS REPEATERS TS ALLAGE EVENTS EVENTSHowever However thus far repeats and come ¬ backs must be sought for in allaged events only and of these the oldest of importance now existing Is the Saratoga Cup which was first contested in 1SG5 Perhaps Mr Vbs burgh will some day give us a serial history of this true classic of our turf similar to his recent interesting one of the Belmont Stakes it certainly affords scope for a won jdcrful review for the roster of its winners jis a veritable hall of fame And this roster reveals tho fact that Kentucky Lex ingtons great son winner of the inaugural race of 1S65 came right back and repeated his victory in 1SG6 1SG6j In 1874 Australians famous son Spring ¬ bok was the winner and in 1S75 he ran his celebrated dead heat with Preakness in rec ordbrcaking time In 1877 and 1878 Parole scored defeating in tho first instance Tom Ochiltree the victor the previous year Tho ncxt double was scored by General Monroe winner in both 1SS3 and 1884 Then there began to bo intermittent discontinuances of the race and it was not until Exterminator appeared that any horse achieved more than ia solitary triumph That great gelding after winning in both 1310 and 1920 could lind no opponent last season and then had a walk ¬ over thereby scoring the only triple in tho history of cup racing in America pevhaps the world worldRECORD RECORD OF CO3IEBACES CO3IEBACESThe The following
