REPEATS AND COMEBACKS Kingstons Three Successive Vic ¬ tories in the First Special Brave Little Reamers Eemark Eemarkable able Feats Exterminators ExterminatorsGreat Great Cup Record BY SALVATOIU In a previous article a list of stake events of importance which had been won more than once by the same horse was given its roster comprising only those of former years whose winners are no longer listed in con temporary tables of statistics To supple inent and complete it this second tabulation is given including all events which are now carried regularly in the great table entitled Winners of Important Stakes one of the principal features of the American Racing Manual Taken in conjunction with the for iner list a complete accounting is made of achievements of this kind from 1865 to the present time The EThe number of instances is probably larger than the average turfman would suspect for repeats and comebacks seem unusual in stake racing But in the course of years more than a few horses have shown them selves able to do these feats Many interesting observations could be made upon the various items in the list below but space precludes more than a few lines of comment which may be used to call attention to the rare instances in which the same horse has won the same fixed event three different times The first instance on record of this sort was the winning of the Congress Hall Stakes an event discontinued years ago by1 Bonnie Lizzie in 1SS1 1882 and 18S3 con secutively this race having been at three ciuartermilc heats It might well have been imagined that this series of victories would never be duplicated but another mare Los Angeles turned the trick in 1SS9 1SDO and 1S91 1S91KIXGSTOXS KIXGSTOXS GREAT ACHIEVEMENT The Congress Hall was a stake of minor importance but the First Special inati gurated at Gravesend in 1S8C was from the beginning one of the feature events of the metropolitan racing season Kingstons achievement of winning this three times in succession from fields which comprised such cracks as Firenze Raceland Tenny Tourna ment etc etc stamped him a truly wonder ful horse It is true that in his first essay in 1888 he was opposed only by Firenze but she was queen of the turf at that period and a host in herself The next year when in the First Special Kingston ran the milef and a quarter in 2OG he established a new record for that distance As time went on and the number of his campaigns lengthened behind him Kingston came to be regarded as a sprinter but it must always be remem bered that in the day of his glory he placed to his credit this triple victory at the handi cap test distance whose premier exponent is the Suburban The First Special was not however a handicap but a weightforage race hence of the truth of its results there can be no cavil The next triple triumph was that scored by Ben Holladay in the Municipal Handicap at Morris Park This race then over the long route of a mile and threequarters was a more severe test than the First Special and 1 after the son of Hanover scored his first victory in 1897 then a fouryearold with l 118 pounds up he was loaded down with 130 in 1898 but brought it home safely and re peated the exploit again in 1899 It is true that he defeated no such fields as did Kings ton but as a matter of fact the cracks that t Kingston defeated with the sole exception of f Firenze would hardly have shone at a mile and threequarters brilliant as they may have been over less extended routes liOAMEIlS SARATOGA TRIPLE TRIPLERoamer Roamer that combination of whipcord whirlwind speed gameness and consistency was the next figure to appear The stake in which he won three victories was the i Saratoga Handicap and he departed from l the precedents previously established by win ¬ ning it not thrice in succession but by skip ¬ ping a year His first victory was in 1914 when he was four under 128 pounds In 1 1916 he came back under 122 pounds and completed his triple in 1918 with 129 pounds 13 in the saddle on which occasion he ran the e mile and a quarter in 2 02 establishing a 1 new track record Brave little Roamer may y you not soon be forgotten During 1921 Exterminator another im ¬ mortal gelding placed himself on record as the first American racer to achieve a double triple In 1919 and 1920 he had doubled In both the Saratoga Cup and the Pimlico o Cup the former our oldest weightforage e classic the latter a handicap event When n for the third time he came out for the Sara ¬ toga Cnp nothing could be found to oppose him and he walked over for the honors But at Pimlico it was different However he e was so good in 1921 that he gave the e sturdy Boniface five pounds and Lady Em meline which was third twentyfive pounds g under the scale and thirty pounds actual weight The Saratoga Cup races won by Ex ¬ terminator were over a mile and threequar ¬ tern and the Pimlico Cups over two miles S and a quarter His effort at Saratoga for the cup of 1920 in 26675 established a new worlds record that still stands standsBILLY BILLY KELLY AJfD THE HAKFORD HAKFORDBilly Billy Kelly was the other hero of 1921 to accomplish a triple This was in the Har ¬ ford Handicap at Havre de Grace an event entirely different from those effected by Ex ¬ terminator as a rule but in which a few weeks ago that surprising steed actually snatched from Billy Kelly the honor of being the first fourtime winner of a notable stake The Harford is only a sprint of threequar ¬ ters and Billy had reeled it off onetwo three In 1919 20 and 21 apparently indif ¬ ferent to the constantly Increasing loads that lie was being asked to carry But he readied tho limit then Unless like Roamer he can skip a year and then come back gloriously Ixjt us all hope that he
