NOSE FINISH IN MiNEOLA Chesterbrook Bests Flying Cloud in Spectacular Contest Pen Rose Shows Her Old Time TimeSpeed Speed in First Appearance AppearanceUnder Under Colors This Year NEW YORK N Y May 2D Chesterbrook the threeyearold son of Cavalcadour and Flying Fairy that races for the Chesterbrook Farm the name under which Mrs E B Cassatt races was winner of the main offering at Belmont Park today when in a gamely fought out finish he beat Max Hirschs Flying Cloud by a nose and Gifford A Cochrans Bersagliere was only a length farther away This was in the mile of the Mineola an overnight handicap and it marked the first winner that J Simon Healey has sent to the post this year yearWhat What was meant for a thoroughly inter ¬ esting day of sport was marred greatly when there were twentyone horses scratched from the original list Fortunately the remaining contestants raced in excellent form and al ¬ most every finish furnished a real thrill and it was particularly so of both the Mineola and a live and a half furlongs dash for fillies and mares in which Pen Rose made an auspicious debut for the year running the five and a half furlongs over the main course in 105 The steeplechase was marked by many accidents when four start ¬ ers came to grief but fortunately all of the riders escaped serious injury injuryFive Five of the ten that had been named for the Mineola were withdrawn but that really did not hurt it as a contest With little or no delay at the post the five were sent away in fine alignment and Bersagliere was rushed into a long lead by Kcogh Lally and Ches ¬ terbrook were right after him and Flying Cloud on the outside was not far away Two Feathers the only other starter was out ¬ run from the start startKeogh Keogh nursed Bersagliere along in front to such good advantage that he was show ¬ ing the way by daylight as he swung for home By that time Lally had dropped back beaten but Chesterbrook and Flying Cloud were racing strongly back of the Cochran horse horseFLYING FLYING CLOUD UNLUCKY COLT COLTAn An eighth from the finish Keogh had to sit down and ride hard in an effort to hold his lead but Chesterbrook continued to close in and outside of him Flying Cloud was also sweeping along in a threatening manner In the last seventy yards the three were closely lapped and while Bersagliere was still fight ¬ ing along it was plain that his early pace had taken too much out of him Callahan was riding Chesterbrook with hands and heels and the brown was responding gamely but Flying Cloud would not be shaken off In that fashion they swept by the judges and there was some doubt as to which had won but Chesterbrook was awarded the decision Flying Cloud was unfortunate in being forced to race on the outside through ¬ out and his was a good race but he has always been an unlucky colt and the jinx still seems to be particularly active activePen Pen Rose making her first start of the year was winner of the five and onehalf furlongs dash for fillies and mares that was the third offering This sterling little mare that was developed for the Triple Springs Farm by James Boden proved that she ia still a most useful racing tool when she took up 122 pounds and ran the distance in 1 05y5 05y5There There was some delay at the post for which Pen Rose was chiefly to blame but she was away fast and Bantry Pass and Mary Patricia were right with her while Arrow of Gold the only other starter began slowly and had scant racing chance chanceLang Lang rushed Bantry Pass to such good advantage that she drew away from Pen Rose as they swung out of the backstretch and she was well clear as she made the turn for home but Pen Rose was digging along behind her in resolute fashion Mary Pa ¬ tricia after showing a flash of speed dropped back as though short and Arrow of Gold was never a serious contender contenderThrough Through the last eighth Pen Rose began to wear down Bantry Pass until at the end she was winner by a length with something left Bantry Pass beat Mary Patricia easily for second place and the last named evidently needed the race raceAND AND NOW THE GHOST WINS WINSWalter Walter J Salmons silks were first and third in the running of the four and a half furlongs dash for twoyearolds that was the fifth offering when Ghost was winner and Soviet third Bernard Hardings Top Notch a recent purchase was the one to finish sec ¬ ond Ghost dominated the running from tho Continued on eleventh page NOSE FINISH IN MINEOLA Continued from first page start Top Notch was inside of him and also went over but the Salmon colt did not bother Top Xotch and finally had room to go over the inside where he finished an easy winner by two lengths Top Notch juse beat Soviet a length for second place and the second one of the Salmon pair raced straight down the middle of the course all the way Frederick wayFrederick Johnsons Certain was winner of the opening four and a half furlongs dash for twoyearolds when he led from end to end and lasted long enough under a hus ¬ tling ride to win by a head from John B Maddens Pravus while J S Cosdens Doughoregan was the one to finish third Certain went straight and that had most to do with his winning for Pravus was trying to bear out almost all the way and Sande had to hit him on the nose repeatedly to keep him straight At the end he was catching the winner at every stride and it was only his lack of racing condition that brought about his defeat defeatFive Five of the ten horses that started in the steeplechase completed the course without mishap and only six of them finished Jo ¬ seph 15 Davin Quecreek ran into si beacon between the second and third fence The Virginian lost his rider at the sixth fence and Our Boots lost his at the seventh Gren ¬ adier refused at
