C, : American Champion Weight Carriers K BY S AXiVATOR. Tho longer ono contemplates the performance of Exterminator In the Clark Handicap at Louisville, tho more ones admiration for him increases. To shoulder 133 pounds, defeat a Held of eight, giving m actual weight from thirteen to thirty-four and a half pounds to every one of them and win easily in 1:50 at a mile and an eighth, after doing the first mile in 1:37 what a truly grand performance! But the great gelding went .on to an even greater feat In the Kentucky Handicap when lie shouldered 138 pounds and ran a. mile and a quarter in 2:01 over a slow track. This time was a fifth of a second better than Morvichs Kentucky Derby performance over a fast track. The race sent Exterminators winnings past tho 00,000 mark. The statisticians are now figuring the possibility of Exterminators overhauling Han o" War and ousting him from the position of leading money-winner of tho American turf. That is something for the future to decide but one thing Is certain, uamely, that as the premier weight-carrier of the American turf he has no rival3. Last year he ran sixteen times and won eight. In thirteen of his starts he carried from 130 to 137 pounds and the lightest impost assigned him was 120 pounds in the Saratoga and Pimrfco Cups. When we recall that he is not a sprinter, but the champion distance racer of America, these facts and figures become doubly impressive. Thus far In 1922 he has raced four times, winning three, and the lightest weight he has carried has been 132 pounds. These feats cannot be par-illeled In our turf history. The handling of high weights at short distances is not a matter for extreme admiration. It is In the long journey that the weight tells. In the old days, when the long journey was the rule and the sprint the exception, tho scale was far lighter than at present. The "revision upward" of It In recent years has been a commendable policy for our jockey clubs to pursue. We should not, however, draw too slighting comparisons between Litter-day and early heroes because of the differences in the weights carried. In the era colloquially referred to as "ancient history" the titans of the turf ran over tracks which trainers and owners of today would pronounce "impossible." Many times they would be little better than plowed fields. The spring-boards now offered were then unknown. It would be Impossible for our modem high-weight carriers and "speed marvels" even to approximate their performances over the Saratoga, Belmont Park and similar courses over these old-lime ones. The effort of carrying high weights, in especial oer such going, would have crippled them or broken them down ruthlessly. It was only the light weight scale which made such racing is then prevailed possible. GREAT MODERN WEIGHT CARRIERS. No tabular resume of the best modern weight-carrying performances has ever been compiled. So I have been moved, with Exterminator as ray inspiration, to put together tho following resume of all stake victories under 130 pounds or more, as shown in the monumental table in the American Racing Manual, "Winners of Important Stakes." In order that the relative excellence of the performance might in each case be better appreciated, the three placed horses, with the distance run and time made, as well as the ages and weights carried, are given. A total of 110 stake-winning performances are listed in which the winner has carried 130 pounds or more In the United States and Canada during the period covered. This probably accounts for all but a scattering few that have ever, at any and all time3, been iccomplished. Owing to the lightness of the scale in former decades, these performances have virtually been limited to the recent past In point of time, the earliest one recorded In the table occurred in the race for the Toronto Cup of 1391, which My Fellow won under 133 pounds. At that time, however, this was a modest event, worth less than ,000 to the winner, and run under a high-weight scale. The pioneer of the notable weight carriers was really Henry of Navarre, which in 1895, is a four-year-old, brought home 130 pounds In the Municipal Handicap at Morris Park, iver a journey of a mile and three-quarters. This, indeed, was In its way an epoch-making erformance, for the two placed horses, Rey el Santa Anita and Clifford, both cracks, carried 126 and 128 pounds, respectively. These comments, of course, exclude the performances f His Highness and Domino in the Futuritys of 1891 and 1S93 as two-year-olds. Two-year-olds are notoriously more indifferent to weight than older horses, for they race short instances. His Highness ran only three-quarters mile ana Domino not quite that far. MAN O WAR AND EXTERMINATOR. The total number of horses listed as winners abovo Is sixty-three, those credited with nore than one win being twenty-four, as follows: Exterminator, nine; Man o War, eight; 3illy Kelly, six; Lucullite, Old Rosebud, Purchase, Roseben, Sir Barton, three each; Ben rlolladay, Boniface, Borrow, Cudgel, FItz Herbert, Jack Atkin, Leochares, Morvlch, Natural-st, Omar Khayyam, Papp, Roamer, Spur, Sun Briar. Wiak Broom and Yellow Hand, two ach. The highest weight carried by an American stake winner, as shown above, was 147 Kunds, which Roseben shouldered and won the Manhattan Handicap at Belmont Park in oth 1905 and 1906, but, on these occasions, the "big train" ran only three-quarters mile. Vt other than a sprinting distance, the honors go to Whisk Broom JX, for his Suburban .ictory of 1913 with 139 pounds up. As everybody knows, the credit of running a mile and i quarter that day, with that weight, in the record time of 2:00 flat, whicn was accorded dm, is not a true bill, for the actual time made was without question from two and a half o three seconds slower. In a way, it was a stunning performance, nevertheless; but, strictly ;peaklng, the winners 139 pounds were not so much an index of his weight-carrying ability is it was of the bad horses which he raced against. So poor a lot were they that it was nly by piling almost 110 pounds upon him that the handicapper sought to bring them together; but even then ho failed, for the son of Broomstick simply ran away with the race, is he also had previously with the Brooklyn Handicap under 130 pounds.
