SURPRISES AT CLEVELAND j, T Winners Come From Unexpected Sources Clip Breaks Record W. A. Cameron Reinstated. CLEVELAND, Ohio, July 21. A card of seven races, devoid of. any outstanding feature, attracted a crowd, of washday proportions to Maple Heights Park this afternoon. Although rain threatened about noon, none materialized and the skies cleared as the afternoon progressed. That the track was at its best was clearly demonstrated when O. Blanks ClP established a new record of 1:43 for the mile and seventy yards in winning the fifth race. The son of Sain was in the van practically throughout and scored by a length margin from. Smuts, with Toe the Mark a distant third at the end. Dancer showed in front after going the first eighth of the sixth and never relin-uished the lead. He had to be hustled in the closing stages, however, to stall off the fast-closing Harry Burgoyne and Supermaid. Surprises came with the running of several of the races. French Canadian upset the calculations of the form followers when he beat Royal Maid and Judge Hanecy in the initial dash after a stirring finish. The time, 1:03, for this race appeared slow, but. it is explained by the fact that the start was. moved back forty-nine yards to permit the.-horses to get settled away before rounding-the sharp turn at the half-mile post. In future all five-eighth races in the book herb will bo made five and a quarter furlongs. II. Neusteter scored his second success at this meeting when Reliability took the measure of some good three-year-olds in the second. Winding Through and Batty II. displayed the most early speed, but Rcliabiiity proved the gamest when the final test came. Machiavelli made amends for his inferior showing in his previous appearance here, when on that occasion he was away none too well. Today he rushed into the lead at once and was never in serious trouble in the third race. White Socks, the choice, was slow to get going, but closed a lot of ground in the final quarter to get second place. The Haymaker representative, Lura, recovered her best form in the fourth and led throughout. Plum Blossom also showed in front at all stages of the concluding dash and scored from Silence and Cacambo. R. J. Howell and H. T. Palmer each had a claim in for Cacambo. In the draw Howell secured the horse for ,300. W. A. Cameron, who was suspended at the Erie, Pa., meeting pending an investigation into the activities of the Cohn-Goodley-Plunkett-Middleton combination, which were later suspended at Conneaut Lake Park, appeared for a hearing before judge Murphy today. As a result of the hearing Cameron was restored to good standing.
