i FIFTEEN SONS AND DAUGHTERS OF OMAR KHAYYAM BRING 2,200 GRAND TOTAL OF THIRTY-EIGHT GO UNDER THE HAMMER FOR 07,750 BIG AND FASHIONABLE ATTENDANCE SARATOGA SPRINGS, N. Y., August 5. ConBdencc in Omar Khayyam, Mrs. Louisa Viaus imported stallion, as a sire was expressed in no small terms last night when fifteen yearlings, the first of his progeny, were sold by the Fasig-Tipton Company at auction for a total of 2,200, an average of ,813.33 each. They comprised the Arthur B. Hancock consignment and their sale marked the opening of the annual yearling auctions. One of the largest crowds that ever gathered within the sale3 paddock turned out for the occasion, despite threatening weather, and the bidding was spirited throughout the night. The Hancock youngsters are grand looking and elicited favorable comment from all sides as they were led into the ring. From the outset it was plain to be seen that they were destined to attract a lot of attention and the first one offered, a chestnut colt by Omar Khayyam Tea Biscuit, brought ,100. A brown colt by the same sire, dam Mary Maud, was the top-notcher from a standpoint of price, he going to the Greentree Stable for ,500. Mrs. Viau was on hand for the sale and was highly elated over it. She owns the stallion, which is standing at Hancocks Claibourne Stud near Paris, Ky. There may be a stringency in the money market in this section, but it was not manifest in the sales last night. Whenever a celt or filly was offered that was considered worthy, there was plenty of action. In a!l thirty-eight youngsters were disposed of for a total of 07,750. This is an average of ,83S.42 and it reflects a healthy condition in the thoroughbred market. In addition to the Hancock yearlings, the others were from John II. Morris Bosque Bonita j Stud, Charles Nuckols, Keene and Black, Keene and Cleveland and W. S. and K. S. Cleveland. ; Morris sent eleven under the hammer and they brought 7,300. An average of ,572.72. ! As usual, society turned out for the sales and dress suits and evening gowns were much present at the ringside. A majority of the owners and trainers racing here were on hand, while others came from distant points in an effort to get some good racing material. Familiar turf figures noted within the inclosure were: Willis Sharpe Kilmer, H. C. Fisher, R. L. Gerry, Samuel C. Hildreth, Walter J. Salmon, Captain T. J. Clay, Arthur B. Hancock, Montfort Jones, B.
