GLORIOUS DA Y OF SARATOGA RACING P TAKE RICH STAKE RACES Sweep By Furnishes a Surprise in the Miller Stakes. Martingale Proves Himself a Mud .Runner in Winning the United States Hotel Stakes. SARATOGA SPRINGS, N. Y., August 5. For the first Saturday of the Saratoga meeting there was a large crowd on hand, the largest since the opening, but it was still somewhat under the attendance of other years. The program was a truly attractive cne, with both the Miller Stakes and he United States Hotel Stakes down for decision, but the fact that the track was heavy spoiled the Miller Stakes to a great extent, when both H. P. Whitneys Futurity winner Bunting and the Rancocas Stables Kai-Sung were scratched. This was atoned for in a great measure by the two-year-old stake race, when thirteen appeared under silks, and J. S. Cosdens Martingale, with a burden of 130 pounds, was returned the winner from Chickvalc in a gamely run race. There came a real surprise in the Miller Stakes, when Mrs. A. R. Lawsons Sweep By took the measure of the two westerners that started against him. Startle and Bet Mosie, the colt that was second to Morvich in the Kentucky Derby. The race was worth ,750 to the winner, as well as a cup that was presented by Mrs. Andrew Miller, widow of the late Andrew Miller, for whom the stake was named. It was thought that the elimination of Bunting and Kai-Sang would rob the race of interest, but as a matter of fact it was a good contest, though terminating in a surprise. BUTWELL A BIG HELP. Butwell got Sweep By off well and he led to the backstretch, where he gave way to Startle and Bet Mosie moved up to her under stiff restraint. The pair of them raced along through the backstretch well lapped, while Butwell took Sweep By back and patiently waited a couple of lengths behind them. It was not until the stretch was reached that Butwell made his move and. as he came on the outside, he was forced wide by Bet Mosie. It was a bit of a temporary handicap, but it landed the son of Sweep in the best going for the racing through die stretch. AVhen an eighth from the finish ne was alongside of Bet Mosie and Wilson had gone to the whip. There vas a short battle and Sweep By came on to win going away by two lengths, while Bet Mosie beat the filly a length for second place. Walter House, who sent Sweep By to the post, had given him a careful preparation for the race, and, as Martingales United States Hotel Stakes was his best performance, so was the Miller Stakes the best race that has ever been run by Sweep By. There was a good finish came out of the opening three-quarters dash when P. S. P. Randolphs Sea Mint, under 127 pounds and giving away lumps of weight, came through on the inside in the stretch to beat The Peruvian home and W. Kearns Spugs finished third. This was a French claiming race and seven of the nineteen that were carded overnight were withdrawn. OLD BROOD MARE WINNER. Soumangha, an old mare that has done service as a brood mare, was winner of the Ballston Steeplechase Handicap under a good ride by Vincent Powers, who also trains the horses of the Greentree Stable. Lytle finished in second place and Houyhnhnm saved third money from Comique. Back of him finished Sea Bryn and Sea Monarch. The only other starter Royal Arch, came to grief at the Liverpool in the second turn of the course when he made a bad landing and unseated "Specs" Crawford. J. S. Cosdens Martingale, under a burden of 130 pounds, was the winner of the United States Hotel Stakes and his was a sterling performance, for he was giving away great lumps of weight to every other starter. Harry Payne Whitneys Chickvale, a maiden under 112 pounds, raced to second place and third was the portion of Cartoonist, with Bo McMillan, racing under the silks of T. J. Pendergast, a close fourth, with Wilderness fifth. There were thirteen went to the post and Martingale at least demonstrated that he is a truly high-class colt in heavy going. The race was worth 0,075 to the winner. There was a short delay at the post and some of the crowding that has marked all of the big fields when the barrier rose. Martingale was fortunate in escaping this early interference and when Clarence Kum-mer rushed him away he soon raced into Continued on third page. Both Chickvale and Enchantment, the Whitney pair, vere unfortunate at the start and they were tail-enders when leaving the post. Bo McMillan and Metric raced forwardly, while the others were in a close bunch. Penman worked his way up on the outside with Chickvale while going to the turn out of the backstretch and then swung over to the inside for the stretch drive. An eighth from the finish he was closing up resolutely and Kummer was forced to sit down and ride Martingale out to save the day, but the son of Martinet and Lady Irma responded gamely to the call and at the end he was still a length and a half to the good. Cartoonist made his challenge on the outside and his was a gallant dash when he landed in third place nose and tail with the Whitney colt and a half length before Bo McMillan, which tired slightly in the stretch drive. Metric, after his flash of early speed, quit badly and the others were strung out, with Mark Twain last of all at the end. The race was by long odds the best ever shown by Martingale and in the history of the United States Hotel Stakes there were only two other colts to win with 130 pounds up. These wore George W. Lofts Papp in 1917 and Samuel D. Riddles Man o War in 1919. The track condition doubtless helped Martingale considerably, while it was a decided handicap to some of the others, but he stamped himself as truly a high-class colt and a game one in the manner he fought it out through the stretch. Thomas Clydes Fair Way furnished more of a surprise when he won the fifth race than did Sweep By when ho took the Miller Stakes. The son of Bryn Mawr won from Rebuke, while back of them finished Sunnyland, Bridesman and Cosligan. When the going is deep form is frequently upset, but it was known that Costigan has shown that he Is a capital mud runner, yet his performance was in disagreeable contrast to his race of Thursday, when he was only beaten a head by Two Feathers, while back of him were Wellfinder, Billy Barton. Trevelyan, Caligula and Recount. Bridesman, which has raced well in mud. had won his previous race at Empire City and on that occasion took the measure of the good filly Thimble, but they finished last and next to last. Zev, from the Rancocas Stable, made a show of the maidens that opposed him in the five and a half furlongs dash at the end of the program. He dashed out into a long early lead and Sande rushed him until ho was still six lengths clear at the end. Doughoregan finished second and August Belmonts Beatitude, a shapely daughter of Ilourless and Belvale, got up in time to take third money from Diamond Dick.
