JOCKEY GARNER WILL RIDE FOR MILAM AGAIN SARATOGA SPRINGS, N. Y., August 5. Jockey Mack Garner, premier rider of the West and one of the foremost pilots of any section of this country, today signed a contract to ride for J. C. Milam, his present employer, in 1923. According to the terms of the document Garner is prohibited from plying his profession during the winter months. The terms involved were not announced, but they are said to be the best ever offered a rider in Kentucky, Garner hails from a family of jockeys, five members of it having seen saddle service Mack, Guy, "Skeets," Lambert and Harry. The first three are still active in their profession, while Lambert is exercising horses for Milam and Harry is in a controversy over a technicality which prevents his riding for the time being. It was in 1914 that Mack rode his first Avinner and Sam Connors was his initial successful mount. This was at Anaconda, Mont., and at the time the rider was only fifteen years of age. "William Cain of the racing firm of Cain and Sanford developed him, but was deprived of his services through a court decision which awarded the rider to R. D. Williams after a lengthy legal battle. Since then, however, he has ridden numerous races for Cain and won many of them. When James W. Corrigan and Price Mc-Kinney formed a partnership in a racing stable on a pretentious scale, Garner was selected as first jockey, and it was with this firm that success began to come his way. Since then he has continued his march toward the front, until at the present time he is regarded as easily the peer of any of our riders. It is doubtful if Garner has a superior anywhere when it comes to saving a horse in front. He invariably seems to have just enough left when his mounts are challenged. He demonstrated this thoroughly when he won the Mount Vernon Stakes with Dr. Clark recently at Empire City. At the present time Milam has first call on his services, Montfort Jones holds second and Harry Payne Whitney third. The lat-tcrs engagement holds good for only the Saratoga meeting and it was taken just a few days ago.
