SILAS VEITCH IS VERSATILE Leaves the Jumpers Alone and Saddles Winner of Main Race on Flat at Blue Bonnets. MONTREAL, Que.. September 8. Trainer Silas Veitch transferred his efforts to the sprinting field this afternoon and furnished the winne- of the best offering of the days card at Blue Bonnets when he sent Cahalan to the post in a three-quarters dash for C. K. Harrison, Jr. His victory came in a driving finish and was materially assisted by Eddie Barnes, who nursed him home to win by a length margin from the fast closing Messines, while Mavourneen was third. The winner was extensively supported in the wagering, which forced his price down from a rank outsider at the start to a well-backed second choice. There was but little delay at the barrier when the field was dispatched and The Lamb was the one to establish the early pace, while Cahalan was racing in .nearest pursuit, with the remainder of the field in close order. Cahalan wrested the lead when well settled into the stretch, while Assume attempted to come through on the inside, while Messines was racing on the outside. The finish for second and third places was a thrilling one and was in doubt until the official placing of the numbers was displayed. It was an off-day card at Blue Bonnets this afternoon, but well-balanced fields of mediocre quality started in each race and the sport on the whole wa3 of a spirited order. The crowd was well up to the standard established at the meeting, while the overhead conditions were all that could be desired. A spirited finish came with the running of the jumping race, in which Alfred Rogers Enrico Caruso graduated from the non-winners ranks. Second portion of the purse fell to Gay Kap, while Elysian was third. The winner dominated the running for practically the entire distance and after stalling off determined opposition from Elysian was forced to stand a hard drive to hold Gay Kap safe, having but a half length advantage at the end. Enrico Caruso was an outsider in the wagering and, netted a return of 511.30 for the usual investment. Water Tax showed a decided improvement in his race this afternoon and accounted for the opening dash, which was for two-year-olds at five and a half furlongs. Water Tax has been racing in better company than this and has shown several good races, but was accorded meager support this afternoon and returned a large dividend. Her success came after a hard drive, in which she got up in the final strides to head Arragosa, while Fitzrue was third. SEPARATED BY INCHES. The best finish of the afternoon came with the running of the sixth race, which was at a mile, when Mayor House and Fornovo were inches apart at the finish, with the former getting the verdict in the final stride. Roisterer was third.. Mayor House was ridden by Erickson and went to the front in the stretch. Sharpe, on Fornovo, was tardy making his move.which cost him the race. Continued on twelfth pace. SILAS VEITCH IS VERSATILE Continued .from first page. Arendal, A. Nl Roys promising two-year-old, will be shipped from Havre de Grace, Md. Dr. F. W. Ashe distributed the books for the coming meeting at Havre de Grace amonff the horsemen this afternoon. W. D. Bernhardt was an arrival this afternoon from New Orleans and interviewed Francis Nelson in regard to the ruling made against his horses at a recent Canadian Racing Associations meeting. Bernhardt was referred to the next meeting of the Canadian Racing Associations, which will be held at Toronto. Two carloads of horses, the property of different owners, left here this morning for Omaha, Neb., to compete at the Ak-Sar-Ben meeting at that point. The Mrs. F. Ambrose Clark horses will be shipped to the Woodbine on Monday by trainer T. J. Donohue. Charles Campeau and Sidney Bender, who are looking after the interests of the Cuba-American Jockey and Auto Club in Canada, report many inquiries from horsemen who have never raced in Cuba before. The change in policy of the club in adding to the overnight races the money formerly added to the stakes has proved a popular move with the horsemen. It means an increase in the overnight races of over 00,000. A special train will be" run direct to Oriental Park from Windsor at the conclusion of the Kenil-worth meeting.
