TUFTERS WINNING WAY Has No Trouble in Taking the Fordham Selling Stakes. Lady Inez Easy Winner Guelph at a Long Price Sande Stars in the Saddle. NEW YORK, N. Y., October 21. Tufter, H. Altermans English selling plater, was an easy winner of the feature race at the Empire City course today when he captured the Fordham Selling Stakes, worth ,030, under the skillful riding of Sande. Rack of him there was a close fight for second place and it fell to Nose Dive, with Costigan third and Duncecap fourth. The only other starter was Care Free. Care Free, pressed by Nose Dive in the running, set the pace fast. Tufter was saved back of them, with Costigan a close fourth and Duncecap bringing up the rear. This was the order through the backstretch, but Sande gradually drew up on the leaders with Tufter and on the far turn raced around on the outside. As he made that move McAtee chose the inside with Costigan and Duncecap followed Tufter on the outside. Care Free soon had enough when the real racing began and then Tufter readily rushed past Nose Dive to go into command. Right there Costigan was going so well on the inside that he appeared particularly dangerous, but Tufter was in a running mood and it was not much of a trick for him to hold his advantage to the end. In the last eighth there was a pretty fight for second place when Duncecap joined Nose Dive and Costigan. The last-named had a bit the worst of the going, on the inside, and the three of them were so close together at the end that it was almost impossible to split them out, but Nose Dive had lasted to save second place from Costigan and Duncecap was just a nose farther back. Care Free was beaten off ten lengths. DECIDEDLY COOL "WEATHER. It was decidedly cold for the sport and there was a high wind blowing, but there was plenty of sunshine and really good diversion. Miss Marie L. Mahlers Lady Inez was easily best of the two-year-olds that met in the opening short three-quarters dash and had little trouble in scoring from Peter Brown, while Homestretch came along in time to beat the tiring OCorra for the short end of the purse. R. J. Horners Guelph showed marked improvement when he was an easy winner of the mile for maidens and winners of one race that was the second offering. At the end he had three lengths to spare better than Venizelos, while High Speed was third. John J. TighesMary Patricia was best at the weights in the "Winsome Handicap over the short three-quarter distance, but Sande outgeneraled Little Bell and nursed Mrs. Louise Viaus Ten-Lec home winner from her by a short head. Dolores had raced third most of the way to finish in that position, but she was beaten four lengths and just- beat Polythia for third money. The mile and a quarter race for selling platers was easy for R. A. Olivers Huonec. while Lord Herbert raced to second place and Thornhedge saved third money from Rustler. Venizelos was claimed out of the second race by Homer Shelby for ,000. Jockey Earl Sande again carried off the riding honors, riding three of his foifr mounts to victory. J. C. Holland has secured first call on the services of jockey F. Weiner for the New Orleans meeting. .7. J. Lyons has purchased the two-year-old Irish Pat oh private terms from F. McGold-rick. K. J. Crawford will train the youngster for his new owner.
