INTERESTING RACING Stirring Finishes Thrill Spectators at Oriental Park. Winners Margin Small in First " Five Races Stonewalls Impressive Victory. HAVANA. Cuba. December 12. Stirring finishes were in order at Oriental Park th H afternoon. The winners of the first fha races were forced to stand long hard drives to score in their respective contests. Brushwood had a lengths advantage over Conundrum in the opener. In the next four ra-c-s heads separated the first and second horses as they flashed past the judges. Brushwood was the first winner that W. A. Carter saddled since the meeting began. Brothers had the mount on this colt and came from behind in the stretch run and at the end was stgagering to stall off Conundrum, which finished with a rush. May Rose won for the Kentucky turfman T. E. Mueller when she beat out Jap Mum a in the- second. It was only after a spirited finish that the Plaudit mare got the decision. When Thistlebloom tired from early pace-making May Rose assumed the lead, bi t had to be driven to the limit to outstay Jan Muma, the latter finishing with a wonderf 1 burst of speed that almost brought victory. The most exciting contest of the aftornt n came with the decision of the third race. It was a matter of inches between the first three, with Duke of Wellington, Carrii Moore and Puff Ball finishing in the ord r named. The result was in doubt until trand final strides, with Duke of Wellington on -gaming Carrie Moore and Puff Ball after ; stubbornly contested final eighth drive tlu t had the spectators on their feet cheering wildly as the three horses strove for supremacy. There was a decided surprise in Approvals triumph over Different Eyes and Dad in tl o fourth race. The last mentioned was tha popular choice, but tired badly at the end and was lucky to save third place. Different Eyes ran well and, gaining with every stride, in the last sixteenth, would have won in another stride. SHORT STOP NARROWLY. Golden Red almost duplicated Approvals success, but after taading until the last few yards of the fifth race gave way to Short Stop right at the end, the latter scoring by a head in a sparkling finish. The final race fell to W. F. Knebelkairo when his Stonewall caught and passed G all-en Chance after turning for home and won going away. Golden Chance had led from the start, but proved no match for the winner when he challenged in the stretch. The trade was in splendid condition today and the sport was interesting. Thomas Monahan, popular president of tl o Cuba-American Jockey and Auto Club, arrived in Havana today on the Ward Lino steamer Orzaba, of which Captain Koefo, a personal friend of Mr. Monahan, is commander. General manager Frank Briien an I other friends greeted Mr. Monahan on l .J arrival.
