Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of Dec. 19, 1902 Racing at New Orleans and Ingleside. It is understood that, in case they are ruled off the turf, Hatfield and Ownbey will transfer their horses to another party and ship them to , Newport to take part in the outlaw meeting which opens today. Jockey Hicks may also accompany them. Hardly a day passes at the present meeting at New Orleans that Durnell and Herz fail to win a purse. Today Durnell saddled Golden Rule for the All-Age Highweight Handicap and the gelding made a show of his opponents, haying a three-length margin at the finish. J. F. Schorr furnished the winner for the two-year-old handicap at Ingleside, when his colt, Gold Bell, just made the winning line by a head to defeat Iredcus. Jockey T. Burns rode Gold Bell and also rode the winner of the s. sixth race. 1 Mose Gcldblatts stable has been in great f, form at New Orleans. He has only started four of his horses up to date Brief, Jessie Jar-boe, Travers and Latson. These four have c carried his colors in seventeen races and in e eight of them the3 have been returned winners. Secretary Mclntyre of the Brooklyn Jockey Club announced today that the Brooklyn Handicap will be changed from a guaranteed stake 0 of S10,000 to an added money stake with 0,-000 o added. "Made in America" is the only recommendation t a jockey needs in Europe. The old-time : r rider "Johnnie" Tabor, now riding a stable of t horses at Sheepshcad, has received an offer to j jride r for a Russian turfman next year and is i turning it over in his mind. If boys of the c class of Rigby can earn 5,000 or 0,000 a year on the other side, Tabor sees no reason why he cannot go and do likewise, and he is disposed to go and make the attempt. None of our jockeys, it seems, is so incompetent as x not to be able to distinguish himself in the c old world. So far this year 601 two-year-olds have won i races over the tracks of the United States and Canada. The sturdy "mudlark" George K., stands at the head in respect to numbzr of races won, with twelve to his credit. Those 1 that never ran unplaced arc Grey Friar, Alan, Hurst Park, Gus Lanka, Sir Hugh, Lord of the Vale and the two dead celebrities, Dr. Walker and Martic Lewis. The real stars of j the year were sent to the post but a few times. They were Irish Lad, Dick Welles, Salvable, Eugenia Burch, Grey Friar, Judith Campbell, Onatas, Von Rouse, Mexican, Mizzen, Aceful i and Skilful.
