Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of January 10 1903 Racing at New Orleans Oakland and New ¬ port portUntil Until further notice jockey Helgeson one of the star riders at the Fair Grounds has been suspended by the New Orleans stewards for unsatisfactory riding The oldest in the list of American records was made in 1873 by Hubbard at Saratoga N Y The distance was two and threequarter miles Hubbard carrying 107 pounds He was a fouryearold There is one record that is older but it was made in a heat race and heat races no longer being run it probably will stand forever It was made by Norfolk a fouryearold with 100 pounds in the saddle He ran two heats of three miles each at Sacra ¬ mento CaL September 2 1865 the first heat in 527 and the second heat in 529U The FoUansbee Handicap was the attraction at Oakland today It was won by Princess Titania owned by J D Millin Princess Ti tania paid 10 to 1 in the books and every horse in the race was quoted at better than 5 to 1 The talent was undecided as to the win ¬ ner and made Walter Jennings Elliot favorite at odds of 5 to 1 more so because jockey Ranch had the mount Fourteen horses went to the post with Irene Lindsey taking the lead at the start She could not hold her advan ¬ tage after setting the pace to the head of the stretch where Princess Titania Byron Rose and Elliot passed her to finish in the order named Several important changes in American rec ¬ ords were effected in 1902 At Brighton Beach July 5 Gold Heels covered a mile and a quar ¬ ter in 203 displacing the previous record of 204 held by Charentus At the same fast track July 30 Bonnibert went a mile and an eighth in 151 effacing the previous record of 151 held jointly by Water cure and Roe hampton At Harlem September 1 the im ¬ ported horse Scintillant H ran a mile and threesixteenths in 157 effectually wiping out Boanerges record of 1 58Vt At Brighton Beach July 26 Hyphen set a new mark when he ran a mile and a sixteenth in 155 as did Major Daingerfield when he won the Lawrence Realization Stakes at Sheepshead Bay July 4 covering the mile and fiveeighths in 247 The Musketeers seveneighths in 125 Lux Castas threequarters in 112 and Platers five and a half furlongs straightaway in 102 are the other changes in the records A new distanca in the records is Judge Thomas three and a half furlongs at Butte in 40 The mile record 135 made by Salvator at Monmouth Park August 28 1890 still stands This record was made on a straight course against time and Salvator carried 110 pounds
