SWAGGER STICK FATALITY Soldiers Cane Made Instrument Instrumentof of Self Destruction by Irish IrishHorse Horse in Accident The strange happening which resulted in the death of a twoyearold recently at a stud farm in England in which the young ¬ ster in frolic ran on to the horns of a cow which was in the same paddock thereby lacerating one of the main arteries of her chest and dying almost immediately brought to the minds of oldtime Irish racegoers the still more remarkable happening which brought about the death of Jockey of Nor ¬ folk CurraghJockey many years ago at the Curragh Jockey of Norfolk was trained at the Heath and the property of S M Nolan who owned some great horses in his time including Noble Howard and Stratocracy one of the best young steeplechasers that ever looked through a bridle Jockey of Norfolk was thought much of and on the occasion of the accident which caused his death was one of a number which faced the starter for a kings plate plateHorses Horses were started by the flag then and some tedious delays used to occur Jockey of Norfolk persistently refused to join his horses and after repeated inducements had failed to persuade him to line up one of a number of soldiers standing by threw his little swagger stick at him himIn In some manner or other the colt caught it between his hind quarters and hugging it closely gradually sat down upon his haunches driving the point of the cane into his intestines and causing death in the space of a few minutes There was a great hub ¬ bub at the time and the soldier was ar ¬ rested but immediately released as the thing was palpably an accident
