SUGGESTING HORSES NAMES French Writer Offers Ingenious Method for Selecting Thoroughbred Cognomens Viator a few of whose recent comments on thoroughbred nomenclature in Le Jockey were reproduced recently in Daily Racing Form has offered an ingenious suggestion for selecting names This is given below belowI I have often lamented the poverty of imag ¬ ination possessed by those who have in their hands the naming of our thoroughbreds Re ¬ cently someone suggested that a series of mythological names would be much better than the prosaic cognomens which have been wished on our modern racers racersFrom From a recent issue of a dog journal I have extracted the following euphonious names Pitou des Marguerites Titan de la Bignette Joel des S Cailloux Saphir de la Victoire Sky de Caprice and Audax de la Choquette I much prefer our vegetarian series of horse names however such as Epinard spinach Lettuce Pomme de Terro potato and Abricot apricot which ap ¬ pear on our presentday programs programsBut But it seems to me that if I owned a great breeding establishment may God forbid I should choose each year some great liter ¬ ary work and give to the young racers the names of the various characters keeping al ¬ ways in view the initial of the dam I should have then a season of Les Miser ables one of Cyranos of Fausts and so forth These various works would servo as yearly mile stones in the history of the stud farm
