DELUSIVE FAVORITES Fair Grounds First Choices Prove Unable to Deliver Irish Bliss an Exception and a Gal ¬ lant Winner Louis A First at a Long Price NEW ORLEANS La January 18 The better grade of horses in these parts were given an opportunity this afternoon and it mada improved racing but the backers were again sadly astray in their deductions Fa ¬ vorites failed in the majority of instances and the winners turned up in outsiders which slightly in demand benefited the layers to a considerable extent A highpriced claiming race with 1000 j as the selling price anfl a purse race at a mile and seventy yards were the outstanding features Both were productive of interest ¬ ing contests and the downfall of ths first choices Royal Charlie held the most atten ¬ tion in the former and he flattered exten ¬ sively when he showed in front and continued to lead for the first half mile but he tired suddenly and badly and finished the whipper in Colando which has been running well in several recent races had quite an extensive following in the race and there was consid ¬ erable rejoicing when he led the others home Lang rode him exceptionally well husband ¬ ing his speed until reaching the stretch where he sent him on and had little diffi ¬ culty in withstanding a challenge from Sun ¬ ny Girl and Orcus OrcusWAPITI WAPITI A FAILURE FAILUREIn In the purse race Wapiti was the one se ¬ lected as the likeliest to earn brackets but here a surprise was furnished when Louis A recently claimed by his present owner won easily from Jack Hare Jr with Fantoche landing in third place Louis A might have been considered in a betting way to some extent but Majestics presence in the saddle was a preventive preventiveIrish Irish Kiss again figured extensively with a winning performance this time under an impost of 121 pounds and conceding much weight to the others His victory came in the mile and a sixteenth dash in which he ruled favorite with Brotherly Love second choice The finish found Irish Kiss drawing away from Pastoral Swain which he had overhauled in the stretch Valor finishing third thirdThe The dash for twoyearolds in which a dozen made the race was productive of a spirited finish between Bamra and Sunayr both being extended to the last ounce Bamra just lasting under an energetic ride by Lang Lyke had the mount on Sunayr and that filly showed to better advantage under the capable ride she received Easter Bonnet a supposed good thing carrying the colors of T W Callahan finished in third place Bamras victory started the favorite backers off in good style for she was backed ex ¬ tensively tensivelyReliability Reliability under a good ride by Harvey scored over Rapid Stride and Flibbertygib bet in the second race raceAl Al Stebler turned up the winner in the third beating Glabella the favorite home homeFRANK FRANK W BREAKS DOWN DOWNThe The worst jolt that the backers had came in the closing dash when Frank W and The Wit backed to the exclusion of the others failed badly Frank W broke down and The Wit was given a weak ride The winner Wadsworths Last showed much improved form under McDcrmotts good ride rideJockey Jockey J Butwell has affixed his signa ¬ ture to a contract to ride for W J Salmon this year yearJ J C Ferriss departed for his home in Nashville Tenn this morning on receipt of advices that his mother had died diedHadrian Hadrian which was to have started in the fourth race was withdrawn withdrawnC C F Clark has disposed of Ogarite to F Beauchamp a local owner ownerManoevre Manoevre and Koellia have gone into re ¬ tirement due to ailing legs legsThe The stewards this morning made final dis ¬ position of the W A Shea case as follows For violation of rule 81 no further entries will be received from horses directly or in ¬ directly under the care or superintendence of W A Shea All badges have been canceled except for stable help while the horses re ¬ main on the grounds groundsThe The stewards requested the management to cee that stable room occupied be vacated as soon as practical without working an un ¬ due hardship on Shea or his associates
