Here and There on the Turf The LangFator Duel DuelBelmonts Belmonts String of Young Horses HorsesRancocas Rancocas Stake Nomina ¬ tions One of the most remarkabh features of the racing campaign of 1922 was the ex ¬ ceedingly close finish between jockeys M Fator and C Lang in their struggle for the honor of leading the riders of the year in races won It was decided by the fact that Fator was riding at a track where there was Sunday racing while Lang was not It chanced that Sunday was the last day of the year Lang rode no winner on Saturday and closed his accounts on that day two winning mounts ahead of Fator But Fator had his chance re ¬ maining and used it so well on that fateful Sunday at Tijuana that he guided the winners of three races and thereby became the leader for the year by the slender majority of one winning mount There had bscn no such finish in any year before among the jockeys nor is a similar outcome probable in a year to come soon soonThe The surprising closeness of this finish led Daily Racing Form to have the records of the two promising riders scrutinized closely and in detail to discover if any errors had been made Considering that Lang had mounts in more than 950 races and Fator in more than 850 this was a task of some magnitude Two omissions were discovered One was that Lang had won a race at New Orleans early in the year with which he had not been credited The other was that similarly Fator had won a race at Maple Heights with which he had not been credited This was a standoff and the result was not affected but each coming star gained an additional winning mount mountThere There was another element in the matter which if differently construed would have left the two lads in a tie Lang finished first on two horss that were disqualified and Fator on one But in compiling its statistics Daily Racing Form has never given a rider a win ¬ ning mount en a disqualified horse horseSo So after all it comes down to the fact that Lang lost his leadership to Fator because the latter was riding in a foreign country on a Sunday and that Sunday was the last day of the good year 1922 August Belmont will come to the races this 3ear with a string befitting the chairman of the Jockey Club but the oldest horse in his string will be a threeyearcld All of thess were well engaged in the early closing stakes while they have also been named for those that have closed later Messenger the hand ¬ some chestnut son of Fair Play and Mission possibly the best twoyearold of last year is engaged in the Metropolitan Suburban and Toboggan Handicaps Osprey has also been named for all three of these Belmont Park Stakes High Hand a son of Fair Play and Haute Roche that was not raced last year is named in both the Metropolitan and Tobog ¬ gan Handicaps For the Ladies Stakes the Belmont nominations are How Fair Felside and Amusement Thus it will be seen that in addition to the threeyearold fixtures for which all of thess are eligible they will have a chance among the older horses this year It is natural that the Rancocas Stable with its immense racing string should top most of the nominators and those named for the Bel ¬ mont Park stakes are numerous In the Met ¬ ropolitan and Suburban entries are found the names of Grey Lag Mad Hatter Thunder ¬ clap Knobbie Flying Cloud KaiSang Little Chief Zev and Bud Lerner Hildreth took the Metropolitan Handicap for the Rancocas Stable last year with old Mad Hatter Both Mad Hatter and Thunderclap are now seven years but Hildreth has a knack of keeping his horses going year after year and it is probable this pair will be brought back about as good as ever For the Toboggan Handicap the Rancocas nominations are Mad Hatter Thunderclap Knobbie Little Chief Bud Ler ¬ ner Rigel Curtis and Whirlwind The stable is not as well supplied with fillies and the only nominations for the Ladies Stakes is Edict winner of the Spinaway of last year
