Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of Jan 19 1903 Racing at New Orleans Newport and Oak ¬ land W T Woodard Jr of Lexington Ky js now engaged in schooling The Devil by Major Richards Patagonia at taking the jumps The Devil is now seven years old and was a prominent handicap horse in his day He will be entered in the big jumping races in the I East this year yearW W OB Macdonough retires from the ranks of turfmen after Thursday January 22 wheu all his horses except Honiton will be dis ¬ posed of at auction at San Francisco He has decided that there is money in breeding race horses but racing them is quite another mat ¬ ter and the combination of both is not good Honiton which is by Ormonde is to be re ¬ served for the scud I W F Presgrave has bought the contract of i jockey Haack and has signed the boy for the next three years to ride for the Goughacres Stable Haack has ridden some fair races at the Fair Grounds at New Orhans No doubt jMr Presgrave discovered talent in him In any event Mr Presgrave will have a long period in which to develop Haack and under proper tuition the boy may make a good rider riderArticulate Articulate the winner of all sorts of races in all sorts of company last year is entered in instakes stakes for the metropolitan tracks this year the June handicaps and others in the name of W C de B Lopez Mr Lopez bred Articu late bringing his dam Utter from Australia Australiaand and last year the colt was leased to G A Davis and trained by R A Smith Under the new rules Articulate is entered in the thename name of the owner Monk Coburn is becoming decidedly un ¬ easy at San Francisco The winter season is wearing away and thus far he has not becti able to gain any satisfaction from the stew ¬ ards of the New California Jockey Club in regard to a new hearing Coburn has been on the ground six weeks T C McDowells young brood mare Brace girdle is now in foal to Kinley Mack the only winner of both the Suburban and Brooklyn Handicaps If the foal is a colt Mr McDowell says he will enter him in the English classics Epsom Darby Two Thousand Guineas and St Leger The fact that Macduff sire of the sensa ¬ tional winner McChcsney was put to death in 1899 has come to the knowledge of numer ¬ ous breeders throughout the country writing to Colonel M Young proprietor of McGrath iana Stud his owner asking for seasons to him Macduff was bred at the Brookdale Farm of the late D D Withers near Red Bank N J where James Rowe now trains Mr Keenes horses He was by Maccaroon Jersey Lass by King Ernest Macduff was in the string of James N Galway and raced for him vith much distinction Macduff sired besides McChesncy Macbeth II winner of the Kentucky Derby in 1887 Satsuma winner of the Burns Handicap in 1898 and the great race mare Daisy F Young paid 7500 for him He lost his popularity at the age of twenty and manager Stevens was asked to give him away or destroy him and failing to find a taker ordered him destroyed
