Twenty Years Ago Today I Chief Turf Events of February 2 1903 J Racing at New Orleans Newport and Oak ¬ land Gilfain the conqueror of McChesney ar rived with the remainder of the Cunningham stable at Memphis today Petunia the bay filly which won the De ¬ butante Stakes for twoyearolds at New Or ¬ leans is the first of the get of R H McCartcr Potters stallion Knight of the Thistle to win winI I brackets Trainers at Gravesend and Sherpshead Bay have had the horses out on the tracks and the Coney Island boulevard during the last few days L V Bells Hermis which received top weight in the Brighton Handicap took a gallop on the Sheepshcad Bay track in spite of the fact that the course was covered with snow Hermis appeared to be in grand condition and looked as if he could break loose from his rider at any time timeIn In the estimation of competent judges Ed ¬ ward Corrigan has the strongest stable in the West He has thirtysix twoyearolds twenty six Americanbred threeyearolds and these Englishbred horses of the allaged division Scintillant Fancy Han Sir Hercules Mafta Santa Planudes Western Duke Stratton Rose Tree LEtrenne Lavia Judicious Sem ¬ per Vigilance McGee Ravel Ormicant Mons de LOrme and Cactus Loyal S a shifty gelding that has won over overthe the jump and on the flat for V Gilbert met his death at the Oakland track in a peculiar way He was striding along and boring down with his head as horses often do when taking their gallops and was about to pass a filly that was being pulled up when she wheeled let fly with both heels and caught Gilberts horse an awful crack on the head Loyal S had won seven or eight races since the fall The Sire Stable in charge of Counselor BUI Brien was moved from Morristown N J to the Morris Park track In the string was Ancke the filly by Locohatchee Harlem purchased from Pierre Lorillard and the colt Attorney by Albert Lady Useful purchased from P J Dwyer last year Both of these threeyearolds show considerably improvement which if carried out in races will make them decidedly useful in the lemon black stripes of the Sire Stable Besides these two promis ¬ ing threeyearolds there are six twoyearolds mostly by Top Gallant and Plaudit The en ¬ tire string has been wintered at Morristown It is Mr Sires intention to have the string ready for early racing and trainer Brien will have them doing useful work as soon as the tracks are in any kind of condition to gallop
