SUCCESSFUL SENDOFF Jefferson Park Spring Meeting Draws a Big Attendance Better Times Wakes Up to Take Takethe the Feature Race Gondolier GondolierFirst First at a Long Price NETW ORLEANS La February 14 Rac ¬ ing scenes shifted this afternoon when ac ¬ tion began at the Jefferson Park track where the racing here will hold sway for twentyeight days terminating March 17 17This This was the second spring meeting ever held over the Shrewsbury track and judging by the wellattended opening it will be eminently successful Todays racing was witnessed by a big attendance and betting action was healthy the fortytwo layers Deing well occupied all during the afternoon afternoonThe The racing was wholesome featured by several close finishes Favorites however were beaten steadily after Milton M the only successful choice of the afternoon had scored in the opener openerOne One of the largestpriced winners of the afternoon and for this winter here was Gon ¬ dolier in the fifth race He reached 10 to 1 at one stage but at this price there was considerable betting activity about him which reduced the price to 30 to 1 He won with ease from May Bodine and Magician MagicianThe The St Valentine Purse at five and a half furlongs for threeyearolds was the best offering and in this too an outsider won when Better Times a frequent disappoint ¬ ment this winter maintained a good lead through the stretch to win easily from Eliza ¬ beth Bean and Contour Stump Jr had the call here but he raced disappointingly and succumbed in the last stride for third place place3IILTOX 3IILTOX 3IS CLOSE CALL CALLMilton Milton M in the twoyearold race had a close call from defeat and with a littla farther to go would have landed in third place It marked the first occasion that the youngsters had been asked to go three and a half furlongs here and Milton M was the leader throughout Forty Two finishing in second place and Blue Monday in third The latter was best but was badly cut off in the stretch when going fast and it forced Wil ¬ son to bring him around the others He was going like a streak at the finish and would have won in a few more strides stridesSagamore Sagamore was the offending favorite in the second race He landed in third place High Cost won easily from Ablaze Higli Cost acted badly at the post but ran in his oldtime form and was much the best bestAshland Ashland given liberal support made good in the third race for which Jack Fairman was a slight favorite The latter finished in second place but had hard work to do so for White Haven was gaining on him steadily steadilyTUOOPEH TUOOPEH IX BEST FOIUr FOIUrThe The closing dash found Trooper racing in his best form and under a good ride he led for the entire race to win from Exhorter with Mormon Elder in third place placeJockey Jockey Pool has contracted to ride for Bud Fisher in the Preakness Stakes and the Kentucky Derby The supposition is that Cartoonist will be the Fisher representative in both races racesMaurice Maurice Calvin director of the Kentucky Jockey Club departs for home tomorrow He had a conference with starters Snyder and Hamilton with respect to starting on Kentucky tracks and they agreed to alter ¬ nate fitting in with the views of general manager Matt Winn It is nearly certain that under the alternating plan botli starters will be appointed One of the men will in all probability do the starting at Lexington and Louisville and the other will dispatch the fields at Latonia This would give the starter at Lexington and Churchill Downs twentyeight days and the one officiating at Latonia twentynine days daysJockey Jockey Corcoran will not be in the saddle at this track this spring having been re ¬ called by his contract employer A L Kirby who wants him to report at Louisville at once Corcoran will probably leave the last of this week weekTrainer Trainer A G Blakely will be given a clean bill of health this afternoon by the Fair Grounds stewards who gave him a letter as follows To whom it may concern This is to certify that no ruling against A G Blakely is recorded with the Business Mens Racing Association AssociationThe The notice was signed by the three stew ¬ ards ardsJ J Hanover has taken over AVinner Take All to train and will race him at this meet ¬ ing ingMobile Mobile is still ambitious to hold a ten ays race meeting and is contemplating doing so following the close of the Jefferson Park racing racingJockey Jockey George Carroll has gone to Hot Springs where he will make a stay before going to New York
